SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,151, dated October 28, 1902.

Be it known that I, JAMES PERDUE, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at McKenney, in the county of Dinwiddie, in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grab-Hooks; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to grab-hooks used in handling logs and lumber, as well as for other purposes.

The objects of the invention are to produce a device of great strength and simplicity which will readily grasp the article that is to belifted and will not accidentally drop it and which may be pivoted or turned upon its supporting-hook.

The device consists generally of a pair of hook-ended arms pivoted together with the other extremities connected together and to a supporting-crown by means of double links or lazy-tongs. A supporting-hook is swiveled to the crown. The links are made double, so as to secure a bearing on each end of the supporting-pivot where connected to the arm, thus securing greater strength than if single links were used. The hook is swiveled to the crown to permit the two parts to be turned in mutual relation to each other.

In order to better understand the nature of the invention, attention is called to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and shows a View of the device in perspective.

This crown is formed of a single piece of metal bent to the shape illustrated, with the pivot 11 connecting its extremities and the hook 6 swiveled to its apex. The upper extremities of the links pivot on the bolt or rivet 11, while the lower ends are connected to the arms by means of the pins or rivets 12.

It is to be noted that the arms 1 and 2 are formed of flat pieces of metal without the usual offset and that the crown 5 is not exactly parallel to the arms, but is slightly twisted to one side, as is shown in Fig. 1. The pivots 4 and 11 are not parallel, owing to the skewing of the crown 5. By forming the arms 1 and 2 of flat metal without offsets the structure is very much stronger and cheaper to construct than if such offsets were present. The crown 5, made of a single piece of flat metal, is simple, strong, and cheap to construct.

Having particularly described and ascertained the nature of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

The combination in a grab-hook, with the flat arms 1 and 2, of the pivot 4, of the flat, straight, double links 7, 8, and 9,10, pivoted to the heads thereof, and the crown 5, formed of a single piece of bent metal, with a pivot 11 connecting the extremities thereof, the said pivots 4 and 11, being in non-parallel arrangement, substantially as described.
