G. W. BROWN.
DEVICE FOR WASHING AND CLEANING WINDOWS. v
(Application filed Dec. 8, 1897.) (No Model.)
THE Nonms PETERS co, Pam-ammo, wAsmuorcu, o. c,
ilnrrnn STATES PATENT QFFICEQ GEORGE IV. BROWVN, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
DEVICE FOR WASHING AND CLEANING WINDOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,696, dated November 22, 1898, Application filed December 6, 1897- Serial No. 660,948. (No model.)
To (1,66 w/wm it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE IV. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Brooklyn) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for \Vashing and Cleaning IVindows,-of which the following is afull and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the.
art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for washing and cleaning windows; and it has for its object to provide a simple and improved device of this character which may be effectively and conveniently employed from inside the window in the operation of washin g and cleaning the outside.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a window, showing my improved device in operative position. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the drying and polishing end device adapted to be used in connection with the carrying mechanism, and Fig 3 is a face view of said drying and polishing device.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, A designates the window frame or casing, 13 the upper sash,- and O the lower sash.
My improved device comprises a rod D, adapted to be arranged outside the window in upright or inclined position with relation to the outer surface of either the lower or upper sash, in which position the rod will have a bearing on the outer edge of the window-sill, as shown at (t in Fig. 1.
E designates a supplementary rod which forms a handle for the outer rod D and is adapted to extend inwardly therefrom through the window opening beneath the lower sash when the latter is suitably elevated. The handle-rod E has a pivotal connection, as at c, with the rod D and is adj ustable with relation thereto to provide for the proper vertical projection of the rod D with relation to either the lower or upper sash, this adtion e and also a set-screw f, by whichit may be secured in adjusted position.
To the top end of the rod D is connected a brush G, having a pivotal bearing, as at g, on said carrying-rod, whereby the brush will always maintain a positive and fiat bearing with relation to the window-surface upon which it is operated. The pivotal connection of the brush with its carrying-rod D may be formed by means of a conicalthimble or ferrule H, adapted to be inserted over a corresponding conical or pointed top end upon the rod D and forming the pivotal point 9.
A drying or polishing device may also be mounted upon the top end of the carryingrod. This device comprises a flat plate or body I, having a wire bail or clamp J, preferably of approximately U shape, as shown, the ends of said clamp being pivoted, as at j, to the side edges of the plate or body I, so that its longitudinal top or middle bar j will extend and project over the top edge of the plate I and firmly bind in connection therewith a drying or polishing cloth or substance of any suitable character. The plate or body I is pivotally connected, as at 'i, with the tubular conical thimble or cap H, adapted to be inserted over the corresponding end of the rod D.
A spring-catch, as at L, may be provided upon the rod D near its upper end, the purpose of which is to grasp and clamp the lower end of the drying or polishing cloth, which is connected with the plate or body I by means of the top clamp J.
It will be understood that the brush device and the drying or polishing device are detachably connected with the rod D, so that they may be used alternately, as desired.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
When the handle-rod E is adjustably connected with the outside rod D in such a manner that the latter will be arranged to oper ate as desired with respect to either the lower or upper sash, the outside carrying-rod may be worked either laterally or vertically by operation of said inwardly-projecting handle rod from the inside of the window, and the brush or drying or polishing device Will be carried over the outside surface of the Window and always maintain a firm and flat bearing with relation to said surface. During operation the outside carrying-rod and inwardly-projecting pivotallyconnected handle-rod will respectively havea suitable bearing upon the outer edge ct of the Window-sill and at the inside of the window-sill, as shown at Cb.
Having f nlly described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The herein-described Window-cleaning device, consisting of a main rod or bar, an adjustable slide mounted thereon, a handle rod or bar pivotally connected with said slide and adapted to be held at an angle to said main rod or bar, and a plate or head provided With a bail which is hinged to the ends thereof, and adapted to hold a cloth, mop or similar device, said plate or head being also provided with a socket attachment pivotally connected with the back thereof and with which the end of the main rod or bar is-adapted to be connected, substantially as shown and described. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres ence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 3d day of December, 1897.
