UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONY W. OBLENUS, OF RIVER EDGE, NEW JERSEY.
COMBINED MOP AND BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,955, dated February'll, 1888.
Application filed April 7, 1887. Serial No. 234,031. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthatLAnrHoNYW. OBLENUs,
' a citizen of the United States, residingatBiver Edge, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements inv Mops and Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in a combined mop and brush, as set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
' which- `Figure 1 is a section in the plane xx, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, the mop being out of use.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a handle. To the handle is secured a head, B, having an arm, C. The arm Ccarries abrnsh, D. A scraper or back, E, of rubber or other suitable material, is secured about a portion of the brush to add to the scouring effect of the brush.
w To the head B is pivoted a frame, G. The pivot F connects the frame G to the head B.
.By swinging the frame G about the pivotF to the position shown in Fig. 1 the mop portion M is brought into position for use. locking device, H, secures the frame G in the position shown in Fig. 1.
To bring the mop portion out of use, as seen in Fig. 3, the pin H is withdrawn from the device. The frame G is then free to be swung to the position shown in Fig. 3. When theframe G has been carried to the position shown in Fig. 3, the pin H is again inserted, as seen in Fig. 3, whereby the frame G becomes locked in the position shown in Fig. 3.
The mop portion M consists of any suitable material, such as a piece of cloth. The ends of the cloth are secured, respectively, to handles or rods N O, adapted to slide or move back and forth in guides P.
In the frame G are secured rollersIK. One of the rollers-as, for example, the roller I-' has its bearings in slots in the frame G, so that said roller can move toward and from theother roller. A spring or springs,. L, tend to draw the rollersI K toward .one another. The mop portion is leilbetween the rollers I K, as seen Apin orl in Fig. 1, and by alternately sliding the han dles N O back and forth'the mop portion is drawn to and fro between the rollers I K, whereby the surplus moisture can be forced out of the mop portion M. It is thus not necessary to touch the mop lportion with the l hands. Soiling of the hands can thus be avoided, and at the same time the device can be rapidly operated, as the handles orrods N O are in reach of the person holding the handle A.
The apparatus forrnsan effective cleaning orA What I claim as new, and desire to secure by 1. The combination, in a cleaning or' scouring device,of a handle, A, having a head, B, a brush, D, connected with the head, and a mop-carrying frame, G, pivoted to the said head to swing in a vertical plane on its pivot for raising the mop from contact with the surface to be cleaned and permitting the brush to act alone, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a cleaning or scouring device, of a handle, A, having a head, B, a brush, D, connected with the head, a mopcarrying frame, G, pivoted to the said head to swing in a vertical plane on its pivot for raising the mop from contact with the surface to be cleaned, and a locking device for holding the mop-carrying frame in its lowered and elevated positions, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the handle A,aframe, G, connected with the handle and provided with rollers I and K, a mop, M, passing about the rollers, guid es on the handle, and rods N O, connected with the mop and adapted to reciprocate lengthwise in the guides on the handle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
