TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
' Be it known that I, Lltonnnn H. MILLER, of Ottawa, in the county of Putnam, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful improvement in Type Gases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 3/ y.
Figure 3 is a section on the line :1: Ev.
The same letters are employed in the different figures in referring to identical parts.
The perspective view represents a section of a case, being about the fourth part of an ordinary case as seen from the side opposite to that on which the compositor stands. The ordinary type case is made of wood divided by permanent partitions into boxes, in whichthe types are contained. The boxes are arranged in size according to the average proportion o type in a font, and there is no provision for-introducing into the cases larger boxes for containing type which may be required in unusual numbers in performing a particular piece of work.
Another objection to the ordinary cases is that the type cannot be cleansed in the boxes, and accumulations of dust, &c., can with only considerable difliculty be removed, as theboxes can only be reversed when all the types have been taken from the case. It is to meet and obviate these objections that my improvements are proposed. The following description will explain the nature of my improvement and enable a person skilled in the art to make the cases after my plan A is a case of the ordinary size of a type case; this is formed with four sides and a bottom, and without the ordinary fixed partitions. It may be formed from any ordinary type case by removing the partitions which form the boxes. B are the boxes, which are formed-independently of one another. They may be made of any suitable material, as of tin or other sheet metal, of hard rubber, or glass, or, in short, of. any suitable substance. They are adjusted to fit into the case, and so constructed that larger or smaller boxes may be used, as-desired. The front part of the box has the bottom formed with an oval surface rising to the end of the box nearest the compositor. This prevents the type getting into the corner, from which it can only be taken with loss of time and labor. The front edge and the edge on one side of the boxes I form with a flange, 3, turned down so as to fit over the edge of the adjoining box, thus retaining the boxes as firmly in place as though constructed in one piece. 0 is a partition crossing the case and sliding into grooves in the sides of the case. This partition has a T-formed flange on top which, when the partition is inserted, covers the edge of the adjoining boxes. The sides have a similar flange projecting slightly inwards, so as to cover the edges of the adjoining boxes. As all the external edges are thus locked, and the edges of the boxes are turned over one another as described, it appears that the boxes are held firmly in place, and would not fall out if the case was turned with the bottom up. With a case constructed after this plan, the boxes being separated from the case, larger may be substituted for smaller boxes, when required, and .the boxes may be removed whenever it is desired to wash or otherwise clean the type, and particular boxes particularly required in certain kinds of work, maybe more conveniently placed for the compositor than is possible with the ordinary case.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A type case when formed with detachable boxes, B, set into a frame, A, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a case A, and independent boxesdi, I claim a removable partition, C, constructed and used substantially as set forth.
3. I claim the boxes 13, when constructed with oval bottoms, substantially as described.
4. I claim the boxes B, when formed with flanges B, for interlocking the boxes when placed in the case,
substantially in the manner set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEONARD H. MILLER.
