Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,541, dated August 29, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH LEVY, of Wolcottville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machine for Examining and Repacking Cigars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a top view of my improved machine, one side and one end being extended. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same takenthrough the line 00 at, Fig. 1.

My invention has for its object to furnish a simple and convenient machine for removing cigars from the box, enabling them to be ex amined without disturbing their relative positions, and repacking them in the same or another box, enabling the work of removing cigars from one box to another to be performed in one-tenth of the time heretofore required; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the box, as hereinafter more fully described.

A is the base-plate of the machine, which is made of a length and breadth a little less than the length and breadth of the smallest-sized ciganbox. To the four corners of the plateA are attached four sheet-metal plates B, the inner corners of which are cut out and the inner sides and ends turned up at right angles, thus forming grooves leading inward from the centers of the sides and ends of the plate A and meeting in the center of the said plate A, as shown in Fig. 1. In the grooves formed by the turned-up sides and ends of the plates B are placed blocks C, which are secured in place adjustably by thumbscrews and nuts D, which pass through holes in the said blocks C and through horizontal slots in the said turned-up sides and ends of the said plates. B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This construction allows the ends and sides of the machine to be extended to adjust it for use with larger boxes. and secured in place by thumb-screws F passing through slots in the plates B and screwing into nuts let into the said blocks E, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. G are sheet-metal plates secured in vertical positions to the ends of the blocks C by thumb-screws H, which pass through vertical cross-slots in the plates G and screw into nuts let into the said blocks C, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In using the machine the plates G are raised and secured by tightening the screws H. The plate A is then placed squarely upon the top of the cigars to be removed, and the plates G, one at a time, are slipped down along the inner surface of the sides and ends of the box containing said cigars, and the screws H are again tight ened. The machine and cigar-box are then inverted and the cigar-box is lifted oiif, leaving the cigars between the four plates G. If the cigars are to be examined, one or both the side plates G are detached by removing the screws H that secure the said plates, exposing the ends of all the cigars to view, and allowing any of them to be removed and examined and replaced without disturbing the others. To repacl; the cigars in thelsame or another box the side plates G are replaced, if they have been removed, and the box is inverted and slipped over the plates G. The box and machine are then turned up and the plates G are raised and secured one at a time, leaving the cigars in the box, each cigar being exactly in the same position in which it was at first.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the base-plate A, flanged and slotted plates B, adjustable blocks C, adjustable blocks E, and slotted adjustable plates G with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
