TYPE-CASE.

To all whom it may conceww,

zen of the United States, residing at Roxbury, in the county of Suffolk, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Type-Cases, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The object of this invention is to provide means for readily removing the accumulated dust and other foreign material from typecases without pieing the separated types contained in said cases, and my said invention, briefly described, consists of a reticulated, or otherwise perforated, removable cover for a type-case whereby the said case may be safely turned bottom up, and shaken until the dust sifts through the reticulated cover. The case is then returned to its original position, whereupon the types settle back to the bottom of their respective compartment-s, the cover is removed, and the case is again ready for the compositors use.

My invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top view of a type case having my present improvement mounted thereon, and Fig. 2 is a" front side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the removable, perforated, cover adjusted for use with a slightly different form of type case. Fig. 4 is a relatively enlarged transverse, vertical, sectional view taken on the line 4- 1 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a further enlarged sectional view of one end portion of the perforated cover, showing particularly the means provided for clamping the cover to the case.

In these drawings the numeral 10 indicates the type case and 11 denotes the cover as a whole. Said cover, as here illustrated, is formed of two sheets of reticulated, or otherwise perforated, sheet material which sheets are swaged at their edge portions to form rabbets 12, said edge portions being then secured together, by riveting or brazing, and so that a thin chamber 13 is provided between said sheets, as is best seen in Fig. 4 of the drawings. One of the perforated sheets (the upper one in Fig. 4) is swaged to provide a single transverse channel 14 and the other, or lower, sheet is swaged to provide two channels 1516; said channels being provided in registrat- Speeification of Letters Patent. In order to stiffen and strengthen the cover I insert between the two perforated sheets bars 17 which extend from side to side of the said sheets and are preferably located in alinement with the channels 1415 and 16.

When my described cover is to be utilized with a type-case having a single, centrally located stile, the correspondingly formed face of the cover is utilized, as. in Fig. 1 and when the cover is to be utilized with a case which is divided, by its stiles, into three compartments or divisions the other face of the cover is used, as in Fig. 8.

The rabbeted edges of the cover, taken together with the transverse channels, serve to raise the perforated plates sufiiciently so that, when the cover is placed upon the type case, the said raised portions fit down closely between the stiles which serve to divide the case into a plurality of divisions and also to rest upon the walls which subdivide the said divisions into individual type compartments and so that, when the case and cover are secured together and turned bottom up, in the operation of sifting the dirt out of said compartments, the types will still be confined within their respective compartments.

In order to clamp the cover to the case I have provided on one side and one end, as here illustrated, slidable clasps 18 of wire which are adapted to be hooked under one side and end of the type case, the other end of the cover being clamped to the case by a hinged clasp 19 that is formed with a T head 19 which is adapted to be swung to either side of the cover and to be hooked under the bottom of the case. Any convenient form of clasp or clamp may be used at the fourth side of the cover and box, or the cover may be held firmly in place upon the case by the operator as he turns the case over to sift out the dirt.

After using the cover it may be quickly removed from the case and laid away until it is again needed. By its occasional use the several compartments of the case may be kept free from the customary and unavoidable accumulation of dust and other foreign matter.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent 1. A cover for type-eases formed of two opposed perforated sheets, secured together at their edge portions, and stiffening bars interposed between said sheets.

2. A cover for type cases formed of two opposed perforated sheets secured together at their edge portions, each sheet being Channeled to register with dividing stiles of 15 the vsaid case, and means for removably clamping said cover to the said case.
