IMPROVED DOOR-BELL AND BURGLAR ALARM.
i L. COLLINS, OF ANTWERP, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ELBRIDGE SIMS, OF SAME PLACE.
, Letters Patent No. 59,820, dated November 20, 1866.
SPECIFICATION. TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, D. L. COLLINS; of Antwerp, in the county of Jeflerson, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Combined Door-Bell and Burglar Alarm, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification:
The present invention consists in a novel arrangementof devices whereby one and the same bell may not i only be used for the ordinary purposes of a door-bell, but at night also made to answer as a burglar alarm.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved combined door-bell and burglar alarm is illustrated.
Figure 1 being a view of the same with the bell removed to more fully show the arrangement of mechanical devices employed for operating the hammer to the bell, and
Figure 2, a transverse section taken-in the plane of the line w w, figure 1. I
A, in the drawings, represents a plate, to the centre-post, B, of which one of the ordinary cup-shaped bells, C, is screwed; D,- the striking hammer for the bell, and E its stem, to which, at one end, it is secured, with the other end of such stem hung by an arm-piece, F, to and upon a fulcrum pin, G, of the plate A. Against the arm-piece F, bears the loose end H, of the arm I, of a spring J, coiled about and around the centre-post B, the action of which spring is to throw the hammer against the inside of the bell, and thus sound it, as such hammer is tripped through its arm-piece F. To trip the hammer, and thus adapt the bell for the ordinary purposes of a door-bell, if the plate A is fixed or secured to a door-frame upon its inside, I extend through such frame a spindle or rod, K, with a suitable handle upon its outer end for turning it, and a cam-piece or plate, L, upon its inner end, in proper position and of suitable shape, that, as such spindle is turned in the right direction, it will so act upon the arm-piece F, of the hammer, as to trip the same for the spring to throw it against the inside of'the bell.
By the above-described arrangement of parts, it is plain to be understood that the bell can be used as an ordinary door-bell, but to adapt it also for a'burglar alarm I have combined with the above the following, viz: L a curved arm hung at one end upon a fulcrum pin M, of the plate A, with its other end, 0, provided with a series of notches or teeth, a, by which the arm-piece F of the bell hammer is tripped as such arm L is operated upon or swung by the swinging of the spindle P, which, through its flat piece 0, acts against'the flatted portion R, of the said curved arm L, in the proper direction to swing such arm so as to cause it to trip the hammer of the bell; this, curved arm being retracted or drawn back to its original position, after'beiug swung as above stated, through a spiral spring, S, suitably connected with it therefor.
The spindle P terminates with a crank-handle, T, which projects beyond the side of the bell, and in such a direction as to extend across the door to the frame of which the bell, by its plate A, is secured, and thus be in position for being struck by the door as it is opened, whereby the bell will be sounded, and, consequently, an alarm given, it being intended to have the crank-handle, T, susceptible of attachment and detachment at pleasure, according as it may be desired to use the bell as a burglar alarm or not.
Thus, from the above, it is plainly obvious that by the combination and arrangement'of parts, the operation of oneis not in the least degree interfered with by the other, and'that one and the same bell is made not only to answer all the ordinary purposes of a door-bell, but also as a. burglar alarm; quite an important advantage and result.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters P'atent The within-described door-bell and burglar alarm, consisting of a single hammer D, arm E, piece or tappet F, spring J, cam L, spindle K, curved notched arms L, actuating spring S, spindle P, and projections Q, R, arranged in connection with the bell A, as and for the purpose specified.
