'.lO ALL WHOM I'I` MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HENRY' BEHN, of New York, in the county and lState of New York, have inventeda new and improved Burglar Alarm; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full andexact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure I represents a front view of the alarm; and v w Figure ITI is asection through the line III and IV. v
The nature of my inventionvconsists in the arrangement of an alarm bell, operated by thevturning of the knob of the lock', in combination with a pendulum, which is' made to swing backwards andnforwards so as to strike the alarm bell by each vibration.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a` plate, to whichthe'dierent levers, hammers, with their springs, stops, dto., are attached, as well'as the alarm bell B. This alarm bell B is provided witha long screw, a, firmly attached to the same, which passes through a suitable boss, n, on the plate A, and is screwed into the wooden door D, (see Fig. II.) Bythis arrangement the whole mechanism fastened to the plate A, together with this 'alarm bell B, is secured tothe door by means of this single screw a, facilitating thereby the attachment of'this' alarm in any desired position. On the plate A a lever, C, is arranged, turning on asui'table centre, 3, and operating the bell-hammer E whenever said lever C is put in motion. To the knob ot' the lock F, arms, G and G', are attached by means of a screw or pin, one arm standing upw'ards, and the other arm downwards. These arms yGr and G' are connected, by means of the rods J J', with the lower end of the llever C., in such al manner that when the knob of the lock F is turned either towards the right or towards the left forthe purpose of opening the door, either the rod J or the rod J' shall move the'lever C, solas to operate :thebell-hammcr E, giving thereby the desiredalarm whenever the knob-of the lock-is turned. H is a pendulum, turning on a. suitable centre, v, fast to the plate A. N is a stop-lever, by which Vthe pendulum H can be held `ina horizontal' position, as represented in the drawing. "On thelever C a-projection, w, is made, which, assoon as the lever C- is put in motion by the turning ofthe knob of the lock, as above described, will come in contact with' this stoplever N, and move the same clear of the end of' the pendulum H, allowing thereby saidpendulum to fall downwards Aand vibrate several times between lthe' lines 2 and 3, operating, by each vibration, the alarm-hammer L, thus' giving three or four additional alarms on the bell B, independently of the alarm given by the direct motion of the lever C. When it\is desired to disconnect this additional alarm, the pendulum H is allowed to hang i downwards, asshown in dott-ed lines. To disconnect the alarm, the pin or screw m is removed or loosencd, vwhen theiknob of thevlock can beturned, for the purpose of opening the lock, without operating the arms G and G', and consequently the alarm.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. The arms Gr and G', rods J J', and lever C, operating the bell-hammer through a lug, adjusted, combined, and arranged substantially las specified. i
2. I claim the arrangement ofthe pendulum II, in' combination with the stop-lever N, operatedby a pro-` jection, w, fast tothe lever C, in the manner and for the purpose as set forth.
' HENRY BEHN.
