COLLINS STEVENS AND GEORGE M. STEVENS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRIKING APPARATUS FOR BELLS, GONGS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,992, dated May 21, 1872.
,To all whom it may concern:
and State of Massachusetts, have-invented a certain new and useful Striker for Bells, Gongs, &c., of which the following isa specication:
The nature of our invention consists in the peculiar construction of the actuating and letoff mechanism for astriker forbells, gon gs, &c., to be used for signal, alarm, or call bells, which may be best understood by reference to the dra-wing and specification; the object being to make a device that shall be. simple in its construction and certa-in in its operation, and that may be set in motion, when wound up, by the exertion of a very slight force.
Description of thc Accompanying Drawing.
Figure lis an elevation and vertical section ot' our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
General Description.
A represents a disk-wheel, having pins B B and D D extending from its face, and located as shown. H K is a hammer, suspended so as -to swing freely about the center of the hub E.
d d is a small disk, represented in Fig. 1 as broken away to show the other parts, attached to the hammer-shank H, and having a notch between apa, in which the pin c of the swinging bar O plays. F and F are projections extending from the hub E, and are acted upon by the pins B B and D D. L is an arm extending from the hub E, and is bent at T, as shown in Fig. 2, the bent part resting upon the upper part N of the latch M, Fig. l. This latch M is so hung as to swing freely outward.
When, from any cause, the latch M is moved outwardly, the part T of the arm L will pass down between N and P, thus allowing the arm L to fall, and the hammer K take the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The bar O is pivoted at b, and has a start, h, projecting toward the disk A, so placed in relation to the pins B B, Sto., that it will strike one of them, and thus hold the disk from revolving when the hammer is upright, as shown in Fig. l; but when the hammerl falls back the shoulder d will throw up the bar O, remove the start h from the pin B', and leave the disk A free to revolve untilthe pin B comes in contact with the shoulder d, and, forcing it back, causes the hammer to strike; then one of the pins D comes in contact with the shoulder F and throws the lever onto catch M. As the hammer assumes the upright position the shoulder cl of the hub passes the bar O back into position. so that the start h locks another of the pins B and stops the disk from revolving. By again allowing the arm L to drop, the above-described motions are repeated. S represents the winding-barrel, arranged with ratchet, pawl, &c., as usual.
rEhe latch M may be operated by a magnet, or by a cord or wire.
It' desirable to have the bell at a distance from the actuating` device, a rod may be attached to the arm L and extended to any rea sonable distance.
From the above description it will be seen that all the power required to strike the Vblow is furnished by the Weight or spring that drives the disk A; and that the person who wishes to cause the bell to strike has only to exert suflicient force to move the latch M, and as often as that latch is moved the bell will strike.
We claim as our invention- 1. The combination of the disk A, having two rows of pins or projections, B B, &c., and D D, 85e., operating in connection with the projections F F on the-hammer-hub E, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the disk A, having a row of pins,B B, &c., with the bar O c, pin h, the projections d d on the ham mer-hub E, and lever L, operating substantially as descrlbed,
and for the purpose set forth.
