UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
LUTELLAS RICHARDS, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
I TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,652, dated December 14, 1897.
Application filed February 3, 1897. Serial No. 621,865. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUTELLAS RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tobacco-pipes.
The invention has for its objectthe provision of certain new and novel improvements in connection with tobacco-pipes of that class in which the stem portion is divided longitudinally into two parts or sections for the purpose of cleaning.
With the above objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described.
In describing the invention in detail referforming -a part of this specification, and wherein like figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section longitudinally-through a pipe embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional view through the screw-threaded plug, and Fig. Sis a plan view of the top of the plug.
The pipe consists of the two complemental portions or sections, one of which has the bowl 2 integral therewith, and a duct 4:, through which the smoke passes to the stem. Directly underneath the bowl on the flattened under surface of the upper section is a recessed portion, the side wall of which is screw-threaded to receive the screw-threaded plug 6, which is hollow, and has one end open, with its other end provided with a keyhole-slot 8. Secured to the flattened surface of the under section of the stem is a headed screw 5, the head of which is designed to be inserted through the enlarged portion of the keyholeslot, and when thus inserted by a longitudinal movement of the under section of the stem in the direction of the bowl of the pipe the head will be securely held in the slot, as will be readily understood.
In order to hold the outer ends of the sectional stem together, the mouthpiece l is pushed over the ends, as seen in Fig. 1.
Interposed between the sections of the stem is a packing-piece 10, which may be of rubber or other suitable material, and may be held in place by cement, thus securing an airtight joint between the sections.
Slight variations may be made in the detail,
parts of the invention without departingfrom the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully shown and described my invention, .what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a tobacco-pipe the combination with the stem-sections and bowl integral with one of same, of the hollow screw-threaded plug 6 de- LUTELLAS RICHARDS.
