Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE;
JAMES ROSS, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED PAPER PACKING FOR JOINTS OF STEAM-ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,456, dated November 6, 1866 antedated October 27, 1866.
To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES Ross, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Packing for Steam and other Joints; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention consists in saturating paper, card or straw board, or other similar materials with the composition described in the specification accompanying an application for Letters Patent of the United States, bearing even date herewith, for a new preparation of paper, Svc., in order to adapt or prepare it for use as packing for steam and other joints, said composition consisting ot' two parts crude petroleum, two parts benzine, and six parts boiled linseed-oil, varied in their proportions according to the kind of paper, &c., upon which the composition is applied, or by which it is saturated, as explained in the description before referred to.
In accompanying plate of drawings my improved packing is illustrated, Figure 1 being a view of a piece of paper saturated with the aforesaid composition, 'and Fig. 2 a section through its length.
To prepare packing' according to the present invention, apiece of paper, cardboard, or other similar material is cut of the requisite size an d shape to suit theparticular jointin or to which it is to be applied or used, and then saturated sufficiently with the composition hereinbefore named, when, becoming thoroughly dried, it is ready for use; the said composition so affecting the texture of the paper as to produce a most perfect packing for joints,
and one which will resist wear, heat, and friction, and, besides, as is obvious, it is exceedingly economical, especially when compared to the packing now in ordinary use.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The packing for steam and other joints herein described. v v
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 26th day of August, 1865.
JAMES ROSS.
