Description

UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE F. HOPPER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF FLOOR-CLOTHS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 51,832, dated January 2, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. HOPPER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Floor Cloth or Paper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to protect floor-cloth or floor-paper, after the same has been printed, by a solution of rubber,,put on over the colors in such a manner that it is rendered practicable to print floor-paper from rollers the same as wall-paper, the colors being protected by the rubber solution, and a cheap and durable floor-paper is produced, to meet the wants of the million.
The solution which I use to protect my floorpaper is composed of india-rubber, dissolved in turpentine and mixed with benzine. The proportion in which I mix these ingredients together is about as follows: rubber solution, one part; benzine, from three to four parts.
The paper is first printed with the desired colors, either in oil or in water, then saturated with oil, and then it is passed through the solution, and then through rollers, so as to press the solution in and close the fibers of paper. The quantity of gum deposited on both surfaces of the paper may be regulated to suit,
and when the solution is dry the paper is sized and varnished. The oil is used for the purpose of penetrating the fibers of the paper and to enable the rubber to combine with the same and form an intimate connection with them; The benzine is used to thin the solution and to cause the terpentine to evaporate quicker, so as to deposit the rubber on the paper.
If desired, the rubber may be exposed to a curing process after it has been deposited on the paper. 7
By the application of the rubber solution I am enabled to print floor-paper by means of rollers, andthe expensive process of printing from blocks can be dispensed with, so that cheap and durable floor-paper can be produced.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The manufacture of floor cloth or paper by successively saturating the printed paper with oil, covering it on both sides with a solution of india-rubber, and varnishing the face side, substantially as described.
2. The floor cloth or paper manufactured as above described, as a new article of manufacture.
