R. MoNEIL. STREET SWBEPER.
No. 583,710. Patented June 1,1897.

ROBERT MONEIL, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
STR EET-SWEEPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 583,710, dated June 1, 1897. Application filed January 27,1897. Serial No. 620,895. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT MONEIL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street- Sweepers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in sweepers, and relates more particularly to that class employed as street-sweepers, and has for its object to construct a sweeper of the abovedescribed class that will be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, effectual in its operations and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture; furthermore, to construct a sweeper and scraper combined that may be easily operated and attached to an ordinary broom, if so desired.
A still further object of the invention is to construct a combined sweeper and scraper which will admit of a new sweeper being readily placed in position and also the replacing of the scraping-blade, if necessitated.
With the above and other objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, and wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sweeper and scraper. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the dividing-rods, showing the hangers in perspective. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the binding-bar. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the ferrule and plate for attaching the handle to the sweeper.
Referring now to the drawings by referenceletters, a indicates the frame, consisting of a bar bent at right angles near such end to form the sides of the frame, said sides having compound bends c c to form the flat portions (Z (Z, to which is attached the scraping-blade b.
Extending in alinement with the bar a. is a binding-bar e, shutting against the side pieces of the frame and held in position by bolts ff, secured in the bar a, said bolts carrying hangers g g, which carry in their lower ends the dividing-rods h h, having forwardly-bent ends 7?. h to engage and hold-the sweeping material of the sweeper. Secured to the rear face of the bar a at its center is a plate is, carrying a ferrule or socket Z, which receives the handle m, said plate being preferably secured by bolts through the bar a, so that the same can be removed and bolted onto the bar e through the apertures e 6, thus allowing the sweeper to be used in the reverse manner when one side becomes worn.
The sweeping material used for the sweeper (which is referenced n and shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1) is secured between the bar a and the bindin g-bar e, said binding-bar being securely fastened against the sweeping material by means of the bolts and nuts through the said bars, this sweeping material being divided as inthe usual construction of brooms and the like by means of the dividing-rods h h, the curved ends of which engage over the ends of the sweeping material and retain same firmly in place. i
When the sweeper has become worn, a new one may readily be inserted by loosening the binding-bar and filling the frame again in the same manner.
To use the scraper, the sweeper is inverted, which brings the sharp or cutting edge of the blade I) in contact with the pavement.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction of my improved sweeper and scraper without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a sweeper a frame, a scraper carried by said frame, adjusting-bolts engaging the frame, and carrying binding-bar, sweeping material, held by the said binding-bar, divid ing-rods suspended from the bolts, said'dividing-rods holding the sweeping material, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a sweeper, a frame, a binding-bar In testimony whereof I afiix my signature within said frame, said bars supported by in presence 9f two witnesses. bolts engaging the rear bar of the frame, hangers on said. bolts, dividing-rods carried ROBERT MCNEIL' 5 by said hangers, and a suitable handle at- Witnesses:
tached to the frame, substantially as shown A. M. WILSON, and described. THOs, M, BOYD, J1
