PUTTY KNIFE AND SGRAPER.
APPLICATION FILED OUT. 30, 1909.

[NVENTQR William Plane ANDREW a GKA AM co. PNUYO-UTNOGRAPNERS WASNMGYON, 0.0
WILLIAM 1?. LANE, 0F TROY, NEW YORK.
PUTTY KNIFE AND SGRAPER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM P. LANE, a I citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, county of Rensselaer, State of New York, have invented certain new and usei ful Improvements in Putty Knives and l Scrapers, of which the following is a specil fieation, reference being had therein to the 1 accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a putty knife and l scraper and particularly to a knife blade having a scraper mounted thereon.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction whereby a pivoted scraper blade is mounted upon a knife blade and adapted to bear against a wall of an aperture therein when I opened into scraping position at an angle to l the knife blade. 1
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set. forth l and the novel features defined by the appended claims. a
In the drawing-Figure 1 is a perspective of the knife; Fig. 2 is a vertical, longitudinal section thereof; and Fig. 3 is a top plan.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
The numeral 10 designates a knife blade l which may be of any desired construction or configuration such, for instance, as the ordi- I nary putty knife shown. This blade is prol vided at one end with the usual handle 11 and intermediate of its ends, one or more apertures 12 are formed. At one side of these apertures, a plate 13 is secured to one i face of the blade and provided with pivoting ears 14L bent therefrom and adapted to i receive a pivot pin 15 mounted therein. The scraper blade 16 is formed with the usual I edge and has secured thereto a plate 17 having pivoting ears 18 which extend through the apertures 12 in the blade 10 and around the pivot pin 15. This permits the scraper to be folded against one face of the knife as shown by full lines in Fig. 2 and to be opened into dotted line position, at which time the lugs 18 bear in contact with a wall l 19 of the aperture 12 so as to secure a firm 1 abutment for the scraper in the use thereof. i
The scraper blade may be removably attached to the plate 17 by means of screws 20 so that it can be readily replaced whenever i desired. 1
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 30,
Patented Mar. 22, 1910.
1909. Serial No. 525,539.
In the operation of the invention it will be seen that when the scraper is folded against the knife blade, it offers no obstruction for the use of the blade for puttying or other purposes and when opened into scraping position, the scraper has a firm abutment against the body of the blade so that the movement of the tool toward its handle holds the scraper in proper position for use. By a movement of the blade in the opposite direction, the scraper may be folded by contact with any object into position parallel with the blade so that it need not be operated by the hand of the user.
While the particular construction of pivotal joint of the scrap-er has been herein shown, the invention is not confined thereto and contemplates any construction of such joint whereby the scraper will have a firm abutment upon the knife blade when in open position.
It will be seen that the invention presents a simple, efficient and economical construction of tool particularly adapted for use as a putty knife and wall or paint scraper.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A knife blade having a scraper blade pivoted thereon to extend transversely thereof and to fold parallel therewith, and means adjacent the pivot of said scraper to abut the knife blade when in open position.
2. A knife blade provided with an aperture therethrough, and a scraper blade having pivoting ears extending through said aperture and mounted upon one face of said knife blade.
3. A knife blade having an aperture there through, a pivotal bearing mounted upon said blade at one side of said. aperture, and a scraper blade having ears extending through said aperture and mounted upon said bearing to contact with a wall of said aperture when opened.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WVILLIAM P. LANE.
