BRUSH-HEAD. l
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1915.
Application led .Tune 12, 1913. Serial No. 773,326.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH SIMPSON and ALDnN A. LUKE, citizens of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county Of Spokane, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brush Heads; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description Of the invention, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to brush heads, and more particularly to lone designed for use for sweeping streets Or stables.
The invention has for its object to so con-y struct a head of this type that the broom can be readily removed and replaced by a new one when worn out.
A further object of theinvention is to provide a broom head with a scraper which can be conveniently used upon reversing the brush.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective viewy Of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamping bar.
The head 1 consists of a channel bar 2, the opposite ends 3 Of'which are ,bent inwardly, the purpose of which will appear later. Riveted to the outer surface of the bar 2 is a. scraper 4 which extends the entire length of the bar 2 and is arranged at an inclination with respect thereto. The clamping bar 5 is also formed from channel iron, and has its opposite ends so cut as to provide reduced, extensions 6, which are adapted yto Vengage the channels of the bent ends of the bar 2, and when thus engaged vertical movement of the clamping bar 5in respect tothe bar 2Q is prevented. Fixed to the central portion Of the clamping bar 5, and upon the outer surface thereof is a shank 7, and to which is secured the handle 8.
The brush 9 may be formed from material suitable for rough usage, such as cleaning streets, stables or yards.
The upper end of the brush material is placed between the bar 2 and clamping bar 5, with the clamping bolts 10 passing through the brush and engaging the bar 2 and clamping bar 5, but when the clamping nuts 11 are driven home the bar 5 will be moved to ward the bar 2, thus firmly clamping the brush at points 12 and 13 so that vertical movement of the brush is positively prevented, lateral movement of the same being prevented by the bolts 10 and bent ends 3.
By providing the scraper 4 it is obvious that upon reversing the brush the same can be used conveniently when necessary.
What is claimed is A brush head including a Ushaped member formed of channel iron with the inner sides of the flanges converging in the direction of the web wherebv the resultant channel is constricted at the bottom, a clamp member formed of channel iron and being substantially straight from end to end and being equipped on the end edges with tapered lugs adapted to fit slidably and snugly in the channels of the legs of said U-shaped member, brush material inserted between said members, and clamp bolts passed through the webs of both members and serving to draw the members toward each other with a resultant binding of said brush material therebetween.
In -testimony whereof, we afx our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
