T. L. MONAGHAN.
HAT FASTENER.
Patented Apr. 13, 1897.
WI TN E SSE 6 llarrnn drarns a'rnNr amen THOMAS L. MONAGIIAN, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
HAT-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,416, dated April 13, 1897. Application filed August '7, 1896. Serial No. 601,979. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. MONAGHAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, forming a part thereof, in which simila r n umerals of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the sev eral views.
This invention relates to hat-pins or similar fastening devices; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is adapted to be connected with the side or sides of a hat or hat-band, and which is in the form of a buckle and provided with a spring tongue or shaft which is connected therewith, and which is provided at its free end with a curved or segmental pin which is adapted to be driven through the side of the hat into the hair, and which operates to securely hold the hat in place.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a hat provided with my improved fastening device; Fig. 2, a side view of the fastening device removed; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, showing the operation of the pin; Fig. at, a similar view of a modified form of construction; Fig. 5, a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4; and Figs. 6 and 7 are side and end views, respectively, of a modified form of construction.
In the practice of my invention Iprovide a hat-pin or similar fastening device 5, which is preferably in the form of an oblong buckle or frame composed of the sides 6 and the ends 7 and provided adjacent to each end with across-bar S, and which is adapted to be sewed to the hat-band or otherwise secured thereto or to the side of the hat, as shown in Fig. 1.
Secured to one of the cross-bars Sis a spring tongue or shaft 9, one end of which is bent around said cross-bar, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and the other end thereof is provided with a curved or segmental pin 10, the end of which is adapted to be passed around the other cross-bar 8 in the operation of the clevice, as hereinafter described.
Then the tongue or shaft of the pin is connected with one of the cross-bars 8, as described, the free end thereof maybe swung outwardly or inwardly, and by pressing thereon the point thereof will be driven through the side of the hat and into the hair, this operation thereof being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4:, and in this operation the point of the pin describes the segment of a circle, and said pin operates to hold the hat securely in place upon the head, and the pin is provided adjacent to the outer end of the tongue or shaft 9 With a backwardly-directed hook 11, which is adapted to engage with the cross-bar 8, over which the point of the pin is passed, so as to hold the pin in position, and said hook may be disengaged from said cross-bar by pulling outwardly on the point of the pin and by bearing on the tongue or shaft 9.
In the construction shown in Figs. 4; and 5 the hook 11 is formed on the crossbar 8, around which the point ofthe pin is passed, and the operation of this form of construction will be substantially the same as that hereinbefore described, the hook 11 in this case engaging with the outer end of the tongue or shaft 9.
In the construction shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the body or frame of the buckle is provided at its ends and on the inner side thereof with spring-loops 14, through which a hat-pin may be passed, and by means of this construction I avoid the necessity of stitching the fastening device to the hat-band, and the operation will be the same as that hereinbefore described.
It will be understood that my improved hatpin or fastening device may be secured to each side of the hat, and it will be apparent that the same is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it is also apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The herein-described fastening device for hats, the same comprising an oblong buckle or frame, having side and end bars, and pro- IO cross-bar over which it passes, whereby the pin is held in operative position substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 5th 15 day of August, 1896.
THOMAS L. MONAGHAN. \Vitnesses:
