UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMIAH XVILOOXEN, OF CANTON, ILLINOIS.
BOW AND SCARF FASTENER. 5
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 284,699, dated September 11, 1883.
Application filed July 14, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern: Be it known that I, JEREMIAH Vv'ILcoXEN, of Canton, in the county of Fulton, in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Bow and Scarf Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the invention; Fig. 2,a detail.
The object of this invention is the construction of means whereby a gentlemans bow or scarf can be readily secured about his neck, and also be in no danger of unfastening.
The device consists of an elastic band slightly shorter than the collar of the individual to be accommodated, and having at eaclrend an eye fitted to catch upon a hooked frame sewed to the bow or scarf.
In the drawings, A represents the elastic band. If the person to use it wears a sixteeninch collar, the length of this elastic band should be, plus the distance between its securing-hooks, fifteen and one-half inches. To each end of said band A is secured a narrow rectangular eye, B. To the back of the bow E is sewed or otherwise fastened the light metal frame 0, having at each side a hook,D D, of nearly the width of the space between the upper an d lower ends of the eyes B. The lefthand one of thesehooks, D, I usually have longer than the other, and bend it into the shape shown in Fig. 2. The reasons for this construction, and the operation of the same are as follows:
Dis bent, as shown, so that its end of theband A may not be detached therefrom when the tie is removed and thrown carelessly down. When the tie is about ones neck, the slight pull of the elastic band is sufficient to retain the hook D in its eye without such a conforniation.
The frame 0 is sewed or otherwise secured to the back of the bow or other neck-wear, one to each bow, but for the same individual, one band A serving for them all. 4
By having the band A sufficiently elastic, one size can do for all necks; but I prefer to make the bands of assorted lengths, each short enough to fit snugly about the wearers collar, and by its elasticity to prevent the accidental separation of the hook D from its eye.
\VhatI claim as my invention, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
In neck-wear, an elastic band, A, having at its ends the eyes B B, in combination with the frame 0, having hooks D D, and a bow or other tie secured thereto, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing invention I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 20th day of June, 1883.
JEREMIAH WILOOXEN. [L. 3.]
