C.C. HANCOCK.
v NECK WEAR.
No. 284,736. Patented Sept. ll, 1883. 1535.2.
WITNESSESI 1W/.gm
UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
CLINTON C. HANCOCK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
NECK-WEARl SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent `N0., 284,736, dated September 11, 1883.
Application mea March 3o, 1883. (No model.)
'To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, CLINTON C. HANCOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neck-Wear, which improvement is fully set'forth in the following' vspecication and accompanying drawings, in
Figure l is a rear view of -a neckscarf having my invention applied to it. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig." 3 is a view of the device embodying my invention detached from the scarf.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
My invention consists of a device for connecting the elastic cord or strap of a neckscarf with the shield' thereof, the same being of the form of a U-shaped pronged clip, which embraces and pierces the bottom edge of the shield, the prongs being concealed and the device adapted to be fitted to any covered shield.
It further consists of means for preventing disengagement of the elastic cord or strap from said device and rendering the same adj ustablev in length, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an article of neck-wear, (shown in the present case as a scarf,) and B the shield or supporter thereof.
C represents an elastic cord or strap, which is connected at one end with a loop, D, and at the other end with a clip, E, the latter being attached to the shield B, said loop being adapted to be fitted on the collar-button, and the strap C to retain the scarf in position on the collar. The clip E consists of a piece of metal or other suitable material of U shape, one limb being of the form of prongs a, and the other limb being slotted to receive the end of the elastic strap C, which end, af-
ter passingthrough a slot, b, in the bend of the clip, is passed around a cross-bar, c, inthe clip, and has secured to it a binding-piece, d, of metal 0r other proper material, whereby the end of the strap is prevented from disengagement from the clip. The other end of the strap C is passed around a slide or clasp, F, which is secured to the buttoning-loop D, said clasp permittingthe strap to be moved, when desired, for the purpose of adjusting the length of the same, and as said clasp and loop are hinged together the loop is permitted to conform readily to the various motions to which it is subjected, and the strap is relieved of wearing action on said loop.
In order to attach the elastic strap to the scarf, the prongs a of the clip E are inserted upwardly from below into the lower edge of the shield B, and the other limb of said clip, in connection with saidprongs, acts as a clasp, so that the clip is firmly connected with the shield, the strap, when in service, tending to hold the clip more iirmly in position and prevent displacement thereof, and also prevent any slipping of the adjacent endof the elastic strap from the clip, the two limbs of the clip also forming somewhat of a spring and pinching the shield, whereby the 'security of the clip, and consequently of the elastic strap, is assured. When the scarf is worn out, the clip may be removed therefrom and applied to another scarf, so as to render renewed serv- Ice.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The improved connecting device for the elastic strap and shield or supportof a neckvwear article, consisting of a U -shaped pronged clip which has said strap secured to it, and is attachable to said shield, at the lower edge thereof, substantially as and for the purpose setforth.
bend thereof and around a cross-bar in one of the limbs of the clip, in combination with the binding-piece d and the buttoning-loop D,
provided with a clasp, substantially as and forthe purpose set forth.
C. C. HANCOCK.
