. BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,076, datedJuly 27, 1897.
Application filed October 10, 1896.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DEHN, a citizen .ofthe United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain'improve- .meritsin books of that class which have detachable and adjustable covers and in which the filler or body portion ofthe book is in tab or block form and provided with suitable printed matter, such as receipts or the like, andadapted, when these blank receipts are all filled in, to be removed and another blank tab inserted in its place. It is not essential that the filler be in tab or block form, as the sheets may be separate, but when gummed together at one end can beused with greater convenience and are therefore preferable.
The object of my present invention is to produce a book of this class; but more particularly the invention pertains to the cover the refor,-which shall be easily removable, capable of holding different thicknesses of tabs, and allowing the tab, when entirely filled in, to be removed and the cover again used for alike purpose.
My improved cover is especially adapted for rough usage, books of this class being generally roughly handled and thereby made unfit for use. The various portions of this cover .may evidently be made of any suitable material, but I have found in actual practice that forming the cover'and other auxiliary parts of light sheet metal, such as aluminium, greatly adds to the durability and service of the book.
To such end my invention consists in cerwill be fully described in the specification and particularly defined in the claims appended hereto.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved book, showing the same in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the book with its hinged cover thrown back and exposing the tab. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the filler, one of the covers, and one of the angle-pieces, the latter forming one half of Serial No. 608,448. (No model.)
the back, the different parts being separated from each other in order to more clearly illustrate said parts. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the hinged cover and an gle-piece forming the other half of the back. Fig. 5is a detailview of the book, partlyin side elevation and partly broken away to show the construction; and
The lower cover is best seen in Fig. 3, and
is provided at the end adjacent to the back with openings 6 b, which are intended to receive internally-screw-threaded tubes 0 0, secured upon the angle-piece O of the back.
As shown, the complete back is composed of two angle-shaped portions 0 D, each portion being formed with a flange c 01, adapted to lie below and above the tab. The other flanges of the angle-pieces are notched into each other, the object being to permit the portions of the back to be separated more or less in order to accommodate different thicknesses of tabs. Two internally-screw-threaded tubes 0 c are screwed into the flange c of ,the an glepiece 0, and in assembling the lower cover these tubes are thrust through the holes bin the cover and the anglepieces and cover clamped together by the screws 8, as seen in Fig. 5.
The cover E (see Figs. l, 2, and 4) is hinged to the angle-piece D by means of a hinge e, a piece of leather, cloth, or other similar material being preferably used, and plates d e being added to hold the hinge in place'upon the back and cover. The clamping-plate e,
hinge e, and flange d are each provided with screw -holes s 5 5 respectively, through which are passed screws 5 (see Fig. 5,) adapted to clamp one edge of the hinge between the clamping-plate c and back. The hinge is connected to the cover in alike manner, it
IOO
being held between the latter and clampingplate d and the screw .9 binding the parts together.
The various parts of both covers being assembled the tab may be placed upon the lower cover, the tubes 0 0 being seated in the notches a. The hinged cover is then placed upon the filler, the tongues upon the backpieces resting in the corresponding notches therein, and the two back-pieces connected by the screws S S, which are passed through openings s s s in the clamping-plate c, hinge c, and flange d and threaded in the tubes 0, the tightening of the screws clamping the filler firmly between the back-pieces.
I have also provided a leaf-holding device which serves to separate the filled-in sheets from the blank ones, the same comprising a spring-bail G, having a transverse member extending across the cover, and two longitudinal members 9' g, slidinglysupported in ears 9 of brackets 9 These brackets are secured to the hinged cover at suitable points upon their edges by means of screws or rivets, as desired. The tension of the spring is to force the transverse member down upon the cover, and as soon as the leaf is filled in it maybe slipped under this transverse memher and thereby separated from the remainder. The longitudinal members of the bail are bent in a manner hereinafter described, the object being that when the bail is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 5 it shall press down upon the cover, but when in the position shown in dotted lines in the same figure the transverse member shall be raised sufficiently from the cover to enable the leaves to be readily passed thereunder. As shown, the ends q of the longitudinal members are slightly curved, the highest point in the curve being about in the center of the portions 9 the transverse member 9 therefore being pressed down upon the cover.
At the point g the wire is bent at a slight I angle to the portion 9 as shown in Fig. 5, and merges again into the portion 9 which is approximately parallel to the portion 9 \Vhen the spring is in the position shown in Fig. 5, the transverse member must evidently be pressed against the cover, but by sliding the entire bail in the ears 9 until the portion g thereof is seated therein, and thereby. brought into a line parallel with the cover,
From the above it will be noticed that the cover maybe easily detached from the filler at any time, especially when the same has been completely filled in and a new one inserted in its place. By connecting the various parts of the cover by means of screws any of said parts may be removed should the same become broken or worn out, and this feature I consider a very desirable one.
I am aware that various alterations and modifications of this device are possible, and I do not therefore desire to limit myself except as particularly pointed out in the following claims.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a cover of the class described, the combination with the lower cover B, provided with holes in one end, of a back composed of two angle portions notched into each other, the internally-sorew-threaded tubes, 0, 0, secured in one of said angle-pieces and extending through the holes in the cover 13, and the screws S, connecting the two portions of the baclepieces; substantially as described.
2. In a book, the combination with the filler, of a cover therefor comprising the backpieces 0, D, notched into each other and having the flanges c, d, the cover 13, secured to the backpiece 0, and rigid with respect thereto, the cover E, hinged to the back-piece D, the internally-screw-threaded tubes 0, c, secured in one of the back-pieces and extending through the filler, and the screws S, passing through the back-piece D, and adapted to clamp a filler between the back-pieces; substantially as described.
3. In a book, the combination with the lower cover, back-piece O, and internallyscrew-threaded tubes 0, c, of the cover E, back-piece D, notched into the back-piece O, the clamping-plates e, (F, the hinge e, secured between said clamping-plates, cover and back, respectively, and the screws S, adapted to clamp a suitable filler between said back-pieces; substantially as described.
4. In a book-cover, the combination with a cover and back adapted to hold a block of paper, of a second cover hinged thereto, brackets, 9 secured upon said hinged cover and the spring-bail, G, sliding in said brackets, and comprising substantially the transverse member, g, and longitudinal members, 9, the longitudinal members being bent to form oblique portions, 9 whereby the transverse member may be pressed against the cover when the longitudinal members are seated in the brackets but drawn away there- ;t'rom when the oblique portions are seated therein; substantially as described.
