To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, I-Innnv G. RAZALL, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in GOIJL bined Book and Index; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to a combined book and index; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts,

to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed, whereby the index may be detachably connected to the book-cover or to an extension-strip, the latter being also detachabl y connected to said book-cover. V

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of my invention, partly broken away; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same; Fig. 8, a detail plan view of the index-cover and extension-strip, partly broken away; Fig. i, a detail edge view of one lid of theindex-cover, and Fig. 5 a transverse section showing the index attached directly to the bookcover and the extension-strip omitted.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A rep resents a book-such, for instance, as a recordbook, although my invention is applicable to any style of book for which a separate index is necessary or desirable. To one or both lids of the book-co ver I attach the top and bottom edges of a longitudinal strip, B, the side edges of the latter being left free, and while I have shown the strip as being preferably equal in its dimensions to the lid of the book-cover to which it is attached I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to these dimensions, inasmuch as it may be found desirable to vary the same. The strip B is preferably of strong Manila paper; but any other suitable material may be employed for the same purpose without departing irom the spirit of my invention.

As shown by Figs. 1 and 2, I insert one fold, a, of an extension-strip, G, of Manila paper or other suitable material, between the strip B and adjacent lid of the book-cover A, said cxtension-strip being either permanent with or detachable from anindex-book, D; but, as will be hereinafter described, the latter construction is the one preferred.

I prefer to provide one lid, E, of the index cover piece with a supplemental piece, E, that is preferably of the same dimensions as said lid and pasted or otherwise suitably attached thereto at the upper and lower edges. Between the cover-lid E of the index and the supplemental piece E, I interposc a strip, F, that ordinarily has one longitudinal edge thereof 6c pasted or otherwise permanently attached to said lid to form a pocket, I); but it is obvious that said edge of the interposed strip may be left free in case such construction should be found more desirable. As shown by the draw- 6 5 ings, the interposed strip E is of the same di' mensions as theindex-cover lid. E; but these dimensions may be varied, if found desirable.

Then the extension-strip G is employed, one fold, 0, thereof occupies the space d between the supplemental piece E of the index-cover lid E and the interposed strip F, the outer fold, e, of said extension-strip being inserted in the pocket I), as best illustrated by Fig. 2.

By the construction above described it will be readily seen that the index D can be detached from the extension-strip C, or the latter may be as readily detached from the book A, as may be found preferable; and, as shown in the drawings, I prefer to provide the outer edge 8c of the strip F, that is interposed between the indexcover lid E and the supplemental coverpiece E, with a notch, f, and cut away the outer edge of said index-cover lid, as shown at g.

The construction just described enables the operator to grasp the extensionstrip 0 between the thumb and forefinger of one hand at the point where the notch f occurs in the interposed strip F, while with the other hand he slides the index back on said strip, thereby bringing the fold c of the latter out of the pocket I) in the adjacent lid of said index. This being done the index is free to be drawn off the extension-strip. 5

In case it may not be desirable to employ the extension-strip G and still have the index D connected to the book A, the lid G of said index is slipped in between the strip 13 and adjacent lid of the book-cover, as shown by IO! Fig. 5; and, as will be seen by this illustration, the index can be readily folded in upon said strip B when it is desirable to close the book, or opened out from the latter when needed for reference.

In order to facilitate the insertion of the lid G of the index between the strip B and adjacent lid of the book-cover, I prefer to cut away the outer corners and lessen the width of said index-lid, as is best shown by Fig. 3.

By my invention as above described it will be seen that the index can be readily spread out in a convenient position for ready reference. and at the same time it may be separated from the book at any time such separation is desirable, this being the essential ad vantage of my device, for the reason that in large concerns where the index gives a brief of the business recorded in the book said index can be carried from place to place for the purpose of reference or the verification of transactions without disturbing the book or incommoding the clerk who may be at work upon the latter.

Another advantage of my device lies in the fact that a party working upon the book has a choice about the use or non-use of the extension-strip, and also whether his index shall be loose or connected to the book-cover.

I am aware of a combined book and index in which the outer edge of the index is pasted or otherwise rigidly secured to the outer edge of the book. I am also aware that the free edge of an index-cover has been flexibly united to the free edge of a book-leaf,whereby the index may be inserted and confined between the book-cover and said leaf with the front edges of its leaves outermost; and I am further aware of an index-tab consisting of a flexible attaching-base having its projecting or tab portion covered and protected by a ,..m'et al plate detachably secured thereto and provided with an index letter or letters; but such I do not claim.

4. The combination, with a book, of an extension-strip detachably connected at one end to the book and an index-book connected to the other end of the extension-strip, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination, with a book, of an extension-strip detachably connected at one end to the book and an index-book detachably conneetedto the other end of the extensionstrip, substantially as set forth.

6. The combination, with a book, of a strip secured at its ends to the inside of a lid of the book, an extension strip having one end thereof inserted between said strip and adjacent lid of said book, and an index-book connected to the other end of the extension-strip, substantially as set forth.

7. The combination, with a book, ofan extension-strip connected at one end to the book, and an index-book having one of its lids provided with a supplemental piece and interposed strip, the outer end of said extensionstrip being passed between the supplemental piece of the index-lid and the interposed strip and turned back between the latter and lid proper of said index, substantially as set forth.

8. The combination, with a book, of an extension-strip connected at one end to the book, and an indexbook having one of its lids provided with a supplemental piece and an interposed strip, the latter having one of its longitudinal edges permanently attached to said lid to form a pocket, the outer end of said extension-strip being passed between the supplemental piece of the index-lid and the interposed strip and its outer fold inserted in the said pocket, substantially as set forth.
