C. A. O. HAARVIG. SHIPPING BILL HOLDER.
No. 560,353. Patented May 19, 1896.
Voli/ceases, /Mf /M/ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. O. HAARVIG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ANDREA J. HAARVIG.
.SHIPPING-BILL HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,353, dated May 19, 1896.
Application iiled November 14,1894. Serial No. 528,799. (No model.)
To all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. O. HAAR- vIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping-Bill Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to order or shippingbill holders, such as are used for protecting bills while in the hands of teamsters.
The object of the invention is to secure durability, compactness, and cheapness of manufacture.
It consists of a pair of canvas covered boards or covers united by a canvas hinge, the latter being secured in a novel manner within a U-shaped spring-clamp.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of my improved holder.
Fig. 2 is an edge view, the covers being folded back to open the clamp. Fig. 3 is an end view l looking into the opened clamp. Fig. el is a detail section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
The boards or covers are shown at A A and are oblong rectangular in form. They'are covered with canvas, the covering being continuous from'one to the other, so as to form a long limp hinge c. into a U-shaped spring-clamp B, the jaws of which close together. The back of the spring is flattened, so that in cross-section the spring` erably lined, as indicated at a', Fig. 4, so as to cover the strip C. The jaws of the clamp B are opened by turning the boards A A back,
This hinge is inserted as shown in Fig. 2. The angles of the clamp now serve as fulcrums, upon which the covers turn as levers, and the jaws are drawn apart so that papers may be inserted or re- I am aware that a holder has been made in which the two leaves of the spring-clamp are parallel, and the board covers are continued into it and are each jointed immediately outside of it. The jaws of the clamps are separated in this form by placing a fulcrum-block between the boards when folded back. I am also aware that in connection with the jointed boards a clamp has been used having a flattened back and a strip has been placed in the hinge so as to separate the inner ends of the sections of the boards lying within the clamp, and thereby securing the hinge within the clamp. I am not aware that such a holder has ever been made in which the boards do not enter the clamp. One advantage of this construction is that the clamp has greater capacity, and hence need not be so wide and cumbersome.
What I claim is- 1. In an order-holder or the like, the combination with the covers or boards A, A', of the prolonged limp hinge a, a spring-clamp B comprising a piece of sheet metal folded with an open bow and having its edges brought t0- gether, the limp hinge being secured to the inner surface of the bow of the clamp and being without attachment to the side members thereof.
2. In an order-holder orvthe like, the combination with the covers or boards A, A', of a prolonged limp hinge a, a spring-clamp B comprising a piece of sheet metal folded with an open bow and having its edges brought together, such clamp inclosing the hinge, a rigid strip conforming to the inner surface of the bow and being inclosed within the hinge, and rivets for securing the strip, the hinge and the bow of the clamp together, the hinge being without other attachment to the clamp.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. O. HAARVIG.
