- FILE CASE? No. 361,852. Patented Apr. 26,1887.
UNIT STATES PATENT ()Fmoa.
FRANK R. ALDERMAN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
FILE-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,852, dated April 26, 1887.
Application filed October 28, 1886. Serial No. 217,422. (No model.)
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK R. ALDERMAN, of Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in File-Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in letter-files.
' The object of this invention is to construct a file wherein letters, invoices, or other papers can be readily alphabetically filed away, and from which the papers cannot accidentally fall out in moving the case from place to place.
To-this end the invention consists of a suitable threesided and bottomed case provided with a retaining spring clamp or bail at the open side of thecase for'holdingthe file-leaves and papers within the case all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved file-case with the spring-clamp opened. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section with clampspring closed and holding file'sheets in position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the filesheetsr In the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification,A represents a filecase having the three sides a, a, and b and bottom 0.
B are coil or other suitable springs, inclosed and secured within the ends of the sides a at the open side of the case, the outer ends of such springs being secured to the arms (I of the clamp-bail O, which latter is pivotally secured to the bottom a, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. The action of the springs B is such as to keep the clamp-bail Gin either its open or closed position.
At or about the center of the side I) of the case is formed a vertical semicircular recess, 6, in whichis secured a pin, D, designed to engage with the elongated slotsf, formed in the tags g of the alphabetical file-leaves E. By this construction it will readily be seen that the alphabetical leaves being hung upon the pin D, they cannot possibly fall out of position, and that the letters or other papers placed between them are held in place by the action of clamp-bail 0. Should the tile be very full and the filed papers beinclined to fall out, they could not so do, as they would strike against the side arms of the clamp and by them be retained in place.
The elongated openings in the tags of the fileleaves enable them to be turned up sufficiently to allow of the examination of papers filedbelow without the necessity of removing any of them.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination, with the box having open side, ot'a bail formed of a single piece of wire pivotally secured near its ends to the bottom of said box, and provided with arms (1, and the springs B, attached at one end to said arms and at the other to the case, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the box having recessed sides a, of the clamp-bail 0, formed of asingle piece of wire pivotally secured near its ends to the front edge of the bottom of said box,and having formed integral therewith the arms d, and the springs B, secured within the recesses in the sides a, and connected with said arms, substantially as and for the'purpose specified.
FRANK R. ALDERMAN.
