B. W; HARDING. BOOK MARK.
N0. 432,038. Patented July 15, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDI/VARD IV. HARDING, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOK-MARK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,038, dated July 15, 1890.
Application filed October 22, 1889. Serial No. 327,763. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD IV. HARDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Marks and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in book-marks; and it consists of a clip so formed as to be attached to the side cover of a hook,
of the device.
and an indicator attached to said clip for designating any desired place in the book with which it is to be used.
The object of my invention is to provide a device which shall be easily attachable and detachable, simple and attractive in construction, and effective in its use.
The invention has, further, for its object the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference designate correspondin g parts, Figure 1 is a perspective View Fig. 2 is a plan View showing it applied to a book. Fig. 3 is a side view.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A represents the indicator attached to aclip formed of a piece of sheet metal B, curved in the manner shown. To this sheet-metal piece are attached the jaws O and -D, formed of a single piece of wire. In making the jaws a piece of wire of the required length and stiffness is bent U-shaped or in any other shape most convenient. Then about midway of each leg of the U a coiled spring E is formed. The endsof the wire are turned downward and back of the lower part of the U, as shown in Fig. 1. The jaws are then attached to the curved sheet-metal piece, so that the coiled springs E E will be partly surrounded by the plate.
The indicator or arm A is attached to the sheet-metal piece by having one end pass through the upper lip a and the lower side I) of the plate, and then headed down to hold it in place. Just before the indicator passes into the plate a coiled spring F is formed. The indicator is so bent that it will be parallel to the lower jaw of the clip. The free end of the indicator and the ends of the upper jaws have small loops made in them to do away with the sharp points which they would otherwise present.
To use the device, the jaws of the clip are opened and it is slipped over one ofthe side covers of the book, the coiled springs E E causing the jaws to firmly grasp said cover. The book is then opened to the desired page and the indicator is turned in position to hold it, as shown in Fig. 2. The indicator will project across both pages in such a manner as to keep the book open.
\Vhen it is desired to close the book and still mark the place, the indicator is turned to extend diagonally across the first page without passing on the second, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. The book can then be closed.
- The clip may be bound permanently in the cover of the book. WVhen this is done the upper jaws may be dispensed with.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a book-mark consisting of the curved metal plate 13, the jaws attached to said plate formed of a single piece of wire, as shown and described, and having the coiled springs E, and the indicator A, attached to said plate and having the coiled spring F, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWVARD IV. HARDING.
