MOUTHPIEC ATTACHMENT FOR TOBACCO-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,043, dated July 6, 1897. Application led January Z8, 1897. Serial No. 621,094.l (Model.)
' citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mouthpiece Attachments for Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved attachment for pipes for smoking tobacco; and the object of the invention is to provide an attachment which may be readily applied to any ordinary pipe to interrupt the iiow of the smoke as it leaves the stem and prevent its striking directly against the tongue and roof of the mouth and thereby burning the same.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which i Figure l is a side elevation of the invention applied to an ordinary pipe-stem. Fig. 2 is a view of the parts detached, and Fig. 3 is a face view of the spider.
In the drawings, a represents a stem of an ordinary pipe, and b the attachment applied thereto. This attachment consists of a cup-shaped part h and a spider portion c,
having arms c and a tubular shank c, which is adapted to enter the passage-way in the stem of the pipe and iittherein with sufficient snugness to hold it in place without the aid of other fastening means. Lugs or projections c3, formed on or adjacent to the arms of the spider, abut against the end of the stem and serve to prevent the edge of the cup from abutting directly against the end of the stem where the stem is as large or larger in diameter than the cup.
It will thus be seen that when the attachment is in the position shown in Fig. l the smoke as it issues from the stem of the pipe will pass through the tubular shank into the cup-shaped part, and thence it will iiow outward between the arms of the spider in a broken and diffused stream, whereby the burning sensation and disagreeable effects of pipe-smoking are completely removed.
In order to provide for cleaning the attachment, the cup-shaped part is threaded internally, and the ends of the arms of the spider are correspondingly threaded, so that the spider may be removed and replaced at will.
The arms c', extending radially from the tube, form a spider, and this spider lies within the end of the cup h when attached thereto, the face of the spider being ush with the open end of the cup. This spider provides not only a simple form of detachable support, but it provides the outlet-passages for the smoke from the cup, the smoke issuing from the end of the tube within the cup and thence passing out between the arms of the spider. No cutting away of vthe tube laterally is required in order to provide smoke-outlets. The stops, it will be observed, are on the edges of the spider-arms.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. In combination in a mouthpiece attachment for pipes, a tube adapted to tit into the mouthpiece, the spider attached thereto at one end formed by arms radiating from the tube the ends of said arms being screw-threaded, the cup secured to the said spider by screwthreads, the said arms of the spider itting within the open end of the cup whereby the smoke is drawn through the outer end of the tube into the cup to escape between the arms of the spider, and the stops on the edges of the arms, substantially as described.
2. In combination in a mouthpiece attachment for pipes, a tube adapted to t inte the mouthpiece, the spider attached thereto at one end formed by arms radiating from the tube, the ends of said arms being screw-threaded, and the cup secured to the said spider by the screw-threads, the said arms of the spider fitting within the open end of the cup whereby the smoke is drawn through the outer end of the tube into the cup to escape between the arms of the spider, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID BLAIR KINGH.
