TOBACCO-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented Jan. 16, 1917.
Application filed February 1, 1916. Serial No. 75,538.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WAIGAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nampa, in the county of Canyon and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates generally to smokers appliances and more particularly to certain new and useful improvements in tobacco pipes.
One object of the invention is to provide a tobacco pipe having means for allowing cool air to mix with the smoke before reaching the smokers mouth, thereby afiording a cool, dry smoke.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be of simple and comparatively durable construction, cheap to manufacture, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed. I
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in'which the separate parts of the invention are designated by like reference characters throughout the several views.
In these drawings: Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in broken section, of a tobacco pipe, showing a device constructed in accordance with this invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, taken on the plane of the line 22 of Fig. 1;and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the parts of the invention detached from the pipe.
In the embodiment illustrated, the invention is shown applied to a smoking or tobacco pipe comprising a bowl 1 having a stem 2 with which is detachably connected the usual mouth piece'3. The stem 2 and the mouth piece 3 are provided, as usual, with a longitudinally extending bore 4.
Extending transversely through the upper side of the stem 2 adjacent the-bowl member 1 is a threaded opening 5 which communicates with the bore 4, and secured in this opening 5 is a tube 6, the lower end of which is externally threaded as at 7 to alford this connection, while the upper end of the tube projects upwardly from the stein, as shown. One side of the tube 6 near the upper end' thereof is provided with an elongated aperture 8 which is adapted to be registered with a similar aperture 9 disposed in one of the sides 10 of a cap member 11, the latter fitting snugly over the upper end of the tube 6 and being adapted to rotate thereon to open and close the aperture 8. Thus it may be understood without further description that the size of this opening 8 may be varied at the will of the smoker to regulate the amount of air passing therethrough.
By this arrangement it may be seen that as the pipe is smoked, cool air from the outside is drawn through the opening 8, through the tube 6 and into the bore 4 of the stem 2 where it is thoroughly mixed with the hot smoke drawn from the bowl 1. This cool air mixes with the hot smoke, cools and dries the latter, and thus affords the smoker a very enjoyable smoke. As hereinbefore described, the amount of air may be easily and instantaneously regulated by rotating the cap 11. This feature is very advantageous when the pipe is smoked under varying conditions of temperature and of the weather.
From the foregoing, it may be seen that a very simple and eflicient device has been provided for carrying out'the objects of the invention. It is to be understood, however, that numerous changes in form and proportion may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of this invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other than that set forth in the appended claim.
I claim as my invention In a tobacco pipe of the class described, the upper side of the stem of which adjacent the bowl thereof being provided with a transversely extending air inlet opening communicating with the bore thereof, a tube having its lower end secured in said opening, the upper end of said tube projecting upwardly from said stem and having an elongated aperture in one side thereof, and a cap snugly fitted over the open upper end of said tube, said cap being adapted to rotate thereon and having an elongated aper- Q Y I 1,212,590

of said cap, whereby to regulate the amount EDWARD WAIGAND. of air allowed to pass into the bore of said Witnesses: I stem and mix With the smoke drawn there H. J. M LLER,
