Description

c. H. PORTER.
Lid Lifier.
No. 57,373. Patented Aug. 21, 1866.
l'fi-ueniors MZ Q W 4 UNITED STATES CHARLES H. PORTER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
STOVE-COVER LIFTER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,373, dated August '21, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. PORTER, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Stove-Cover Lifter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a novel and useful implement especially intended to be used for liftingithe covers of stoves, ranges, and other similar purposes; and it consists in forming the lifter of a shaft or bar of iron or other suitable metal or material of the proper length, having at one end any suitably-shaped handle with which to handle it, the other end of which is made of a hook shape, and has extending across the opening of said hook at spring-plate hung at its inner end to the said shaft, and so connected with a thumbpieee or lever at or near the handle end of the shaft that by depressing said thumb-piece with the thumb or finger of the hand the said springplate is caused to swing away from the opening of the hook shaped end of the shaft, thus leaving it free to pass under the crossbar or wire of a stove-cover, when, removing the thumb from the said thumbpiece, the spring'plate closes upon the said hook, and is there held with {sufficient firmness by its spring that, as the cover is then lifted, it will be impossible for it to slip off of the lifter, the importance of which is obvious, such slippingof the covers from the lifters now in common use having proved a serious annoyance and disadvantage in their use.
In accompanying plate of drawings my im proved stove-cover lifter is illustrated, the figure thereof being a side view of the same.
A in the drawings represents the shaft portion of the stove-cover lifter, which may be made of a square, round, or any other suita ble shape, and of cast or malleable iron or other suitable metal or material, this shaft A at one end having a suitable handle, B, for grasping it with the hand, and at the other being made of a hook shape, C.
Across the opening a of this hook C extends a plate, D, hung at its inner end upon ajpivot, b, of the shaft A, so as to swing thereon, which plate, through a conneotingrod, F, hun g at one end thereto, is connected by a pivotjoint, 0, with a thumb-piece or lever, G, hung and turning upon the shaft A at or near its handle B; d, a stiff bent spring secured at one end to the shaft A, the loose end of which spring is so connected to the closing-plate D of the shaft-hook as to keep it tightly closed upon the same.
When the lifter hereinabove described is to be used it is taken by its handle with the hand, and, pressing with the thumb or any convenient finger upon the thumb-piece G thereof, the spring-plate D is thrown up and away from the hook of its shaft A, leaving it free to be run under the cross-wire of the stove-covers, when, removing the thumb from the said thumb-piece, the plate D is closed upon the hook by its spring and there held, the spring being of suflicient stiffness to tightly hold it so, thus preventing the cover from becoming disengaged from the said hook while being lifted from or placed upon the stove or range, as the case may be.
I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent- A lifter for stove-covers, having a coveringplate, or its equivalent, for its lifting hook or end, arranged so as to be operated substantially in the manner described, and for the purpose specified.
CHARLES H. PORTER.
