Description

4 l www N4 PETERS. PHOYOALITHOGRAPHER, WASH NGTcN D G @eine tutes getraut @fitta C. F. BOSWORTH, CF MILFORD, CONNECTICUT. Letters Patent No. 67,402, dated August 6, 1867. l
IMPROVED PLATE-LETER.
@In tlgehuls referat tf1v in ligase ritns rtent 211th milling nrt nf tigt simu.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAYy CONCERN:
Be it known that 1,0. F. BoswonTH, of Milford, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new improvement in` Plate-Lifter; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with thc accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure l, a side View, and in Figure 2 an end view, cutting the handle on line x x.
This invention is designed for lifting hot articles, such as plates, pans, dac., used in cooking, and called a plate-lifter; and it consists in the arrangement of a pair of jaws or hooks attached to a handle so as to turn freely thereon, and each jaw provided with a lever in such relative position to the handle that either or both jaws may be opened or closed by the pressure of the hand holding the lifter.
To enable others to construct and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe the saine as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the one jaw or hook, and B the other, the lower ends of which are turned inward, as denoted at a and b in fig. 2, and their upper endsattached to a handle, C, so that the jaws may be opened orclosed at pleasure; and from the upper end of each jaw a bar, D, extends back over the handle, so as to come within the grasp of the hand which holds the lifter;v and when so grasped in the hand the two levers D, being pressed together,
close the jaws; or, hy loosening the grasp, either one or both of the jaws may be opened by the thumb of the same hand which grasps the handle.
Its operation is as follows: The plate or dish to be lifted is represented in blue, fig. 2. The lifter is placed over the plate, and the jaws opened, by pressing the thumb between the two levers D, into the position denoted in red, fig. 2. Then release the levers from the opening pressure of the thumb, and closing the hand will force the two levers D together, and turn the jaws under the plate, and firmly hold them there, as seen in iig. 2, so that the plate may be lifted and set to any desired position; and when so set thejaws may be opened, as before described, and removed from the plate. Thus the lifter may be used for numerous purposes for whic other lifters arc not adapted, inasmuch as this lifter may be removed from the thing lifted in whatever position it may be placed.
, I am aware that instruments for lifting plates constructed with one or two swinging bars upon a handle have before been used. I do not, therefore, broadly claim an instrument provided with jaws for lifting plates or similar articles; but what 'I do claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Jlhe combination of the two jaws .A and B with their respective levers D, arranged upon a handle, C, so
as to operate in the manner herein described.
` C. F. BOSWORTH.
