UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR LANGE, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,643, dated December 8, 1896. Application filed February 29, 1896; Serial No. 581,280. (No model.)
To all whom it 7220/1 concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR LANGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Saloon and Restaurant Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of saloon and restaurant tables having metallic legs, and pertains especially to certain specific improvements therein hereinafter described and claimed.
The objects of my invention are, first, to provide for adjusting the length of the legs so as to secure a firm bearing upon an uneven floor and support the table-top in a true horizontal position; second, to provide for the removal of the lower half of the legs for convenience in. shipping and in order to prevent breakage; third, to provide a form of refreshment-containing box which may be firmly attached to the U shaped table-leg and cleansed without removing the same from the table.
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings,in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved table. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the vertically-extensible joint, drawn on a central lon- Fig. 3 is a detail view of the same from the side provided with the joint-locking thumb-screw. Fig. 4 is a top view of the refreshment-containing box.
The same or like parts are identified by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.
Each leg of the table is formed with an upper section A and lower section B, the former being formed with a socket O'in its lower end, into which the upward-projecting pin B of the lower section is adapted to fit.
E is a thumb-screw adapted to lock the pin B in the socket in an obvious manner.
In adjusting the table or, removing the lower half of the leg the thumb-screw is loosened to release the pin B, and the latter is then free to be either partially or wholly withdrawn. When partially withdrawn, it is obvious that the leg is correspondingly lengthened.
F is a platform secured to the respective legs at the lower ends of the upper sections and adapted to serve as a brace for the legs, the downward-proj ectin g flange f bein g adapted to fit into a socket f in the leg.
Gr is a refreshment-containing box located at each corner and provided with a curved or rounded rear corner g, adapted to conform to and thereby facilitate attaching the same to the leg, and also to provide for easily cleansing the box after it has been in use.
Referring to Fig. 4 it will be observed that the leg-section A is U-shaped in cross-section, with the rounded corner of the box fitting against the open side. The 1egsection A is provided with an arm or flange H, which projects under and supports the bottom of the box, and an arm or flange I at its upper end, which facilitates its attachment to the table-top. The box is also provided with a metallic bracket J on its front upper corner, which facilitates its attachment to the tabletop at that point.
It will be observed that the lower half of a table-leg formed in this manner can be very easily removed for the purpose of shipment. The upper leg-sections are supported and kept from breaking by the platform F, and the lower sections being removed the table can be packed into a very small compass.
serviceable in tables with metallic legs, as such tables are otherwise easily broken while being transported.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
legs composed of detachable section's united in a vertically-extensible joint, the thumbscrew for locking said joint at any point of adjustment, and the platform located at the lower ends of the upper sections, and provided with downwardly-projecting flanges f adapted to fit into a socket f in each of the legs whereby the latter are braced and securely bound together, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the table-top, the jointed metallic leg sections A and B, one of said sections being provided with a socket C in its lower end and the other of said sections having a pin B adapted to fit into said socket,
The construction described is especially '1. with a rounded rear corner g, substantially J AS. B. ERWIN,
as described. LEVERETT 0. WHEELER.
