JOHN H. D. EVERETT, 0F SAULT STE. MARIE, MICHIGAN.
FOLDING TABLE. l i
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Jol-IN H. D. EVERETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Sault Ste. Marie, county of Chippewa, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in folding tables and has for its object the production of a table of this character, which will be especially designed for use as a camp or launch table.
A further object is the production of a folding table as mentioned which will be of durable and economical construction and efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
TvVith these objects in view my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation' of -a table embodying my invention, a portion thereof being shown in section in order to more clearly illustrate the construction, Fig. 2 is al bottom plan view of the table top detached, intermediate portions of the lateral extensions of the table t-op being broken away, Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the table in folded condition, Fig. 4 is a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal section of the table in folded condition.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises the table top 1 preferably of the elongated substantially rectangular form shown. Hingedly secured at@ to the longitudinal or lateral edges of the table top 1 are extensions 3 adapted when in extended positions to assume the position flush with the upper surface of the table top 1. The extensions 3 are held in extended or operative positions through the medium of strips 4which are slidably mounted in transversely extending dovetail grooves 5 provided for the reception thereof in the under side of the table top 1 substantially midway of the extremities thereof. Sliding movement of the members 4 is limited by screws 6 which are secured in the grooves 5, the outer end portions of said screws engag- Specication of Letters Patent.

ing elongated longitudinal slots 7 provided in the inner end portions of the members 4. The slots 7 permit of outward sliding of the members 4 to a position in which the outer ends thereof engage against the Imder sides' of the extensions 3 to serve as a means of support for the latter, said members 4 being adapted, however, by engagement with the headed screws 8 projecting therefrom and which serve as linger engagements to be slid rearwardly in the slots 5 to release the exten-- sions 3 to permit of the same being folded up against the under side of the top as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Said extensions are held in folded or inoperative positions by means of turn-hooks 8 which are pivoted upon the under side of the table top 1, said hook members heilig adapted to be turned to engage the inner edge portions of theextensions 3 when the latter are in folded positions.
The table top 1 is supported upon a foldable stand which comprises the uprights or legs 9 and 9. Said legs are hingedly secured intermediate their extremities and adjacent the lower ends thereof to the respective extremities of a connecting or brace bar 10. rlhe hinges 11 which connect the legs 9 and 9 to the brace bar 10 are so constructed as to permit said legs to swing beyond the vertical position, limiting the movement thereof to an upward and outward inclined position as clearly shown in Fig. 1, permitting of said legs being folded upon said bar, as clearly shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. This, in connection with the table top 1 to which the stand is connected in the manner hereinafter set forth, will produce a brace or truss possessing great firmness and rigidity when in use; the peculiar connection between the legs and brace bar being such that the stand will remain in stable equilibrium when the table top is detached. The legs 9 and 9 are of double T-formed construction as will be observed, the same being provided at their respective ends with cross pieces 12 and 13 and 12 and 13 respectively.
Connect-ion of the leg 9 with the table top is effected through the medium of a pin 14 which extends longitudinally of the table Atop at one end thereof, said pin being adapted to releasably engage a socket or perforation 14 provided for the reception thereof in the cross piece 13 as shown in Fig. 1. The pin 14 is adjustably secured to the table top l through the medium of screws 15 which engage elongated slots 19 provided in the rearward or base portion of said pin, as clearly shown in Figs'. 2 and 5. This adjustment which is yafforded said pin provides means whereby any slack or lost motion in the connection of the legs 9 and 9 With the table top 1 may be readily taken up in order tomaintain a firm and rigid construction. Provided upon the leg 9 adjacent the lower end thereof is a loop 17 adapted when the stand is in folded conditionto engage the pin 14 as clearly shown in Fig. 5 to suspend the stand upon the table top; a loop 18 provided at the corresponding end of the table top being provided for engagement with a suitable supporting hook or bracket 19 for suspending the entire device in a place for suitable storage when not in use.
Provided upon the under side of the table top 1 adjacent the opposite extremity there of are stops 20 against the outer ends of which the cross piece 13 of the leg 9 is adapted to engage when the table is in unfolded or operative position. A hook 21 provided upon the leg 9 adjacent the upper end thereof is adapted to engage an eye 22 provided upon the under side of the table top 1 adjacent thereto for locking said end of said table top to said leg. 'Vhen thus locked it will be observed that movement of the table top relative to the legs 9 and 9 is absolutely prevented, the table top being rigidly locked to said legs so that if desired the table may be moved about by grasping only the table top. Provided upon the outer side of the leg 9 adjacent the lower end thereof is a clip 23 adapted when the folded stand is suspended from the pin 14 as above set forth to yieldingly engage the projecting eye 22, as clearly shown in Fig. 5 to hold the leg of the stand in close proximity with the adjacent end of the table top.
A table of the construction set forth is durable and economical in construction, and the same may be readily and expeditiously unfolded from folded position or folded together from extended or unfolded position. TWhen in unfolded position a construction possessing great rigidity and firmness is provided because of the truss effect produced in the peculiar connection of the supporting legs with the table top and the connecting brace bar. rllhe cross piece 13 of the leg 9 is of a width less than that of the cross piece 13 of the leg 9 so that in the event of warping of the table top the engagement thereof t with the latter will not be materially affected l and so that the hook 21 may without difficulty be engaged with the eye. Further, the construct-ion is such, that when in folded position, that is when not in use, the same will occupy a minimum of space for storage or shipment.
wWhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. l, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. ln a table, a pair of legs, a longitudinal brace hingedly connected to each of said legs and limiting the out vard swing of the upper ends thereof, said legs being provided with enlarged upper ends, a. top adapted to rest upon said upper ends, a stop arranged on the under face of said top and adapted to abut the inner face of the upper end of the adjacent leg, means for detachably securing said leg in engagement in said stop, the enlarged upper end of the opposite leg being provided with a recess, and a sliding` meinber arranged upon the under face of said top and adapted to engage in said recess, substantially as described.
2. A table comprising a pair of legs provided with spread feet, transverse, members secured to the outer faces of the upper ends of said legs forming enlarged upper ends therefor, a longitudinal brace hingedly connected to said legs and limiting the outward movement of the upper ends thereof, a top. a pair of stops secured to the under side of said top adjacent one end thereof adapted to receive the upper end of the adjacent leg between them and to abut the inner face of the respective transverse member, means for detachably securing said leg and its member in engagement with said stops, the transverse member of the other leg being provided with an aperture, and a sliding member on the under face of said top adapted to engage in said aperture, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
