To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN E. KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allenport, in the county of \Vashington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Legs and Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention has relation to removable legs and supports, and more particularly to that class of removable legs which are employed for supporting washing-machines, tubs, and other articles; and this invention has for its object to provide removable legs which can be easily and quickly clamped to a washing-machine, a tub, or used in connection with various other structures to which it is applicable.

Another object of my invention is to provide removable legs which may be readily attached to a desired article in such a manner as to firmly and securely support the article and at the same time so construct these legs that they may be quickly detached from the article when it is desired to support the article in another manner.

Briefly described, the improved removable leg comprises a socket which is rigidly fastened to a washing-machine, tub, or other article which is to be supported, and I provide a leg which is adapted to lit in said socket and be secured therein by clamping said leg to the bottom of the article which it supports.

To put my invention into practice, I preferably construct the removable legs and their sockets in such a manner as to reduce the cost of manufacture to a minimum, at the same time providing legs and sockets of this character which will be strong, durable, and comparatively simple in construction.

The other objects and advantages of the improved removable legs Will be apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the drawings accompanying this application, and throughout the several views of the drawings like numerals of reference indicate like parts, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a washingtub, showing the improved removable legs attached thereto and supporting the tub. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the tub, showing one of the legs attached thereto, the lower end of the leg being broken away. Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view of the improved socket in which the leg is supported. Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of the upper end of one of the removable legs. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the clamping-bolt forming one of the attachments of the removable legs.

In carrying out my invention I employ sockets, one of which is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and these sockets are adapted to be secured to a washing-machine, tub, or other articles to be supported, and the referencenumeral 1 indicates one of the sockets, which is made to conform to the article to which it is to be secured, and the socket is tapered vertically and upon its one side is provided with an enlarged portion 2, and in this enlarged portion I provide a tapered slot 3, having beveled sides 4:. The edges of the socket 1 are provided with apertures 5, whereby the socket may be secured to the article which is to be supported. The legs, as designated by the reference-niuneral 6,.are constructed with a shank portion having an enlarged tapered end 7, this enlarged tapered end having beveled edges 8, the end of the leg being adapted to fit within the slot 3 of the socket, and the rear face of each leg is cut away, as indicated at 9, forming a shoulder 10, which when the leg is placed in position is adapted to engage the lower edge 11 of the socket 1.

Each one of the legs 6 is provided near its enlarged tapered end with apertures 12. Through one of said apertures is adapted to pass a clamping-bolt let, this bolt having an upwardly-bent head 15 and an annular shank portion 16, upon which a winged thumb-nut 17 is adapted to be secured. By referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings it will be seen that the upwardly-turned end 15 of the bolt 14 engages the charm or bottom flange 18 of the article to which the legs are secured and the bolt 14 passes through one of the apertures 12and carries a thumb-nut 17 and which when rotated the bolt carrying the upturned head can be drawn outwardly, thus firmly securing the leg 6 within its socket and in engagement with the side of the tub or article being supported. The plurality of apertures 12 are provided in case an article is to be'supported which has a deeper charm or bottom flange than that shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, in which case the thumb nut of the clamping-bolt could be removed and the bolt placed in either one of the apertures, which would facilitate the clamping of the leg in position upon the article.

It will be seen from Fig. 1 of the drawings that the sockets l and the enlarged ends 7 of the legs are secured to the tub or other article at about two-thirds of the height of the tub from the bottom, thus providing a better support and brace for the legs and preventing the same from in any manner collapsing.

While I have herein shown the legs as being made straight, it is obvious that when making the same 'they may be formed to extend outwardly and of any contour advantageous to the supporting of the washtubs or other articles.

It will also be understood that the sockets and legs may be made of any desired ornamentation whereby they will be applicable to articles other than washing-machines and washtubs,and I may make other slight changes without departing from the general spirit of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In a device of the character described, a socket-plate rigidly secured to an article to be supported, and provided with an enlarged outer face having a vertical dovetailed tapering slot combined with a supporting-leg having a tapering upper end fitting in said dovetailed slot, and having a shoulder on its rear face to engage the lower edge of the socketplate, said leg having a plurality of openings and a removable clamping bolt. extending through one of'said openings below the lower edge of the article being supported, and having an upturned end to engage with said article, and a winged nut on said bolt for holding the same in clamping engagement with the article.
