EDWARD L. SNADER, OF YORK, N. Y.
COFFlN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,781, dated March 16, 1897.
Application filed January 7, 1897- To all whom, t may concern;
` art to make and use my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which-,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case with the lining partially withdrawn. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is an end viewwith the cover removed. Fig. 4. is an end view with the cover in place.
My invention is in the nature of a limited improvement on the devices shown and described in a series of patents issued to me November 5, 1895, and April 21, 1896, appertaining to the same art; and it has for its object to provide a coffin especially adapted to prevent inoculation of contagious diseases when the dead body is being buried or transported; and my invention consists in certain details of construction, as hereinafter described and claimed.
I am aware it is not broadlynew to provide a case for cofns and caskets with an airtight lining, metallic or otherwise, as such cases having a longitudinal removable top have been heretofore lined with Zinc or other metal, leaving an extended joint to be successfully packed. I am also aware that similar cases with a removable top have been treated with various compounds to make them more or less air-tight.
In the said drawings, A is an Vordinary wooden case adapted to receive through its open end A a coffin or casket. This case is provided with a removable metallic air-tight lining B, that snugly fits the interior of case A and has an open end B.
Around the open Serial No. 618,318. (No model.)
end of the lining is soldered, brazed, or other wise secured a stout metallic frame C, made generally after the manner described and claimed in my Patent No. 549,335, but provided with improved end-holding devices for the interior brace D. These brace end-holding devices consist of two L-shaped lugs E, secured to opposite sides of the open end of the lining or frame and having their open ends o, a rakin gin opposite directions,where by the brace D, provided with slightly-curvilinear ends, (seen at b b', Fig. 5,) being inserted within the open end of the case and given a partial turn on its longitudinal center, engages in the lugs and binds, so as to hold it securely in place while the screw S is being tightened to secure the cover I hermetically to the airtight lining.
- The frame C is provided with proper grooves or recesses c c to receive gaskets or desirable packing to make the joint air-tight.
The outside of the cover I is nished in a manner to correspond with the case A.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The case A and air-tight lining B in combination with the frame C, secured to lining B and having its edges projecting to rest upon the edges A of the outer case A, constructed substantially as described, and packed cover I all constructed arranged and operated substantially as described.'
2. The case A, lining B, frame C, removable end coverI brace D and adjusting-scrcw S in combination with the `Lshaped lugs E E arranged on opposite sides and opening in opposite directions as set forth.
EDVARD L. SNADER.
