Inventor s y e n r v L A LUMBIA PLANOORAPH co.. w
pariah era OZRO I-I. GILLESPIE, OF MADISON, NEBRASKA.
BUBIAL-GASKETL To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OZRO H. Ginnnsrm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Madison and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Burial-Casket, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a burial case, one object of the invention being to provide a cotlin of novel form, in which the corps-e may be exhibited by sliding a tray endwise out of an inclosing case, the tray constituting a closure for the case.
The invention aims, further, to provide a burial case of'the type indicated which may be manufactured at a comparatively trifling expense.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the pres ent invention appertains.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed with out departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective showing the coffin, the corps-e receiving tray being partially withdrawn; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the coiiin; Fig. 3 is a fragmental longitudinal section of the case portion of the coffin.
The coflin, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is a composite structure and comprises a semi cylindrical case 11, including a flat bottom 12 and a curved top 1 1. The case 11 is preferably fashioned in one piece, the longitudinal edges of the strip of material from which the case is formed being overlapped and soldered, at the bottom of the case, as indicated at 15. The case carries handles 9. One end of the case 11 is closed by a permanent wall 17 and the other end of the case is open. The cofiin further includes a tray 18 comprising a bottom 19, side walls 20, an

height than the side walls. The outer end wall 22, at its upper edge, conforms approximately to the curvature of the top portion 14 of the case 11 of the coflin. The end wall 22 may be provided with a handle 23, the same being pivotally mounted or otherwise held in place.
Extended circumferentially of the top 14% of the case 11 of the cotlin and secured thereto, adjacent one end of the case, is a strap 24, the outer longitudinal edge of which may be depressed to form a bead 25 receiving an outstanding resilient or compressible packing 26.
In practical operation, the corpse is laid out in the tray 18, the tray being slid endwise into the case 11. During the funeral and at other times, the tray 18 may be maintained in partially retracted position, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the head and shoulders of the corpse may be displayed readily; or if desired the corpse may be shown at full length, by removing the tray 18 entirely. When it is desired to close up the cofiin, the tray 18 is merely slid into the case 11 until the end wall 22 of the tray forms a complete closure for the open end of the case. When the tray 18 is moved inwardly, the end wall 22 of the tray will engage with the resilient packing strip 26, and thus a complete closing of the coffin is eifected, the weight of the corpse serving to prevent the tray from sliding.
The entire structure, preferably is fashioned from metal and may be painted, trimmed. and otherwise ornamented to correspond with the degree of expense which is to be involved.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A cofiin comprising a case and corpse tray mounted to slide in the case, the case having an opening through which the corpse tray may be inserted into the ease, and the corpse tray including .a part which covers the opening and closes the case when the tray is slid into the case.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
