Specification of Letters Patent.
rammed June o, 191,4.
Application med Marci: 21, 1914. serial No. 826,38
To all 'eo/Loin. 'it muy collec/a.'
Bc it known that I, .lAMUIzL J. DoN- :vi-1cm', a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Oneonta, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Burial- Caskets, of which the following is a spccification, referente being had to the acooni panying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in burial caskets, and more particularly to caskets which are `composed of plastic material in which a reinforcing structure is embedded.
An object of this invention is the provision of a burial casket, the casket comprising a body which is preferably composed ofglass inl which a reinforcing structure is embedded, and a 'cover for the body which is also formed of glass and in which a reinforcing structure is mounted, meansbeing provided to form air tight joints between l the body and the cover. y
A further object of this invention is the provision of a burial casket comprising a body and a cover composed of plastic material, the body having metallic plates connect-ed thereto to which the handles of the casket are connected.
With these andother objects in View, my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and .i1-rangement of' parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated inthe accompanying drawing, in which, .l
Figure l is a transverse sectional v1c'w of tbe casket; F l is a longitudinal sectlonal view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective View showing the manner of connecting oneI of the handles to the casket.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the casket comprises a body l and a cover Q, which are preferably composed of glass, the body having a marginal bead 3 formed thereon at its lower edge and transversely extending beads l formed on the bottom thereof. A peripheral bead 5 is also formed on the side and end walls of the body intermediate of their upper and lower edges, and a reinforcing,r structure which is composed of `aluminum or other suitable metal is embedded in the body. The remforcing. body comprises a lower rectangular frame (l, which is embedded in the bead 3, the side portions of the vframe being connectedby transverse rods 7 which are embedded in the transversely extending beads t on the bottom of the body'. An upper rectangular frame 8 is embedded in the bead 5, thcupper and lower frames being connected 4,by the 4vertical metallic strips Y9 whichare curved -at their upper and lower ends for engagement around the rods ofthe upper and lower frames (3 and 8.
vThe side and end walls of the body are fopmed with a lateral flange l0 adjacent their upper edges andl the cover 2 has a groove 11 formed therein adjacent its edges, the groove being adapted to engage the upper extremities of the side and end walls of thebody and the edges of the cover engaging-the flange 10 on the body.- The flange 10 is provided with a plurality ofA spaced openings 12, and the projecting edges ofthe cover are also provided with a plurality of spaced openings 13, the openings 1i! and 13 registeringr to receive the fastening bolts 1-l, upon which thc nuts 15 are mounted to securely hold the cover to` the body. The
cover 2 is also provided with a reinforcing rectangular frame 1G.
Spaced pairs of handle supporting plates 1T are connected at intervals to the body by rivets 18, the plates being curved for a portion of their length as at 19, to engage the bead 5 of the body, and connecting each pair of plates is a rod 20 upon which a.
handle '2l is pivotally mounted, by mea-ns of which the casket may be carried.
From the above description, taken in con nection with the accompanying drawings, it will 'be seen that I have provided a burial casket which is composed of glass `and the body and cover of which are provided with novel reinforcing structures, the handles of the casket being connected to metallic supporting plates. so that slipping or breaking of the body of the casket by the handles is prevented.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l desire to secure and claim by Letters Patent is 1. A casket comprising n body and a cover, said body having a bead formed on the lower corners thereof, the bead projecting below the bottomof said casket, a. rectangular reinforcing wire frame embedded in said bead, transversely extending beads formed on lthe bottom ofsaid casket', transverse wires mounted in said transverse beads and connected at their opposite ends to the side portions of said rectangular frame, a
sov
bead formed on the Walls of said body beu tween its opper and lower edges, a rectan gular reinforcing. frame embedded n said last mentioned bead, vertical strips connect- 5 ed at their opposite ends to said rectangular frames, and means for fastening the cover to said body;
2. A plastobural casket comprising a' body and 'a cover, a .bead formed on the 10 Walls of lsaid body between their upper and lower edges, a ,reinforcing member ernbeddedl in' said bead, handle Asupporting ,plates connected to the side andvend Walls of said body, said plates having curved portions for engagement with said bead, and 15 handles pvotally carried by said plates, as and for the purpose described.
In testrnonywhereof I hereunto affix my l signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
