Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 1918.
Application filedOctober 20, 1917. Serial No. 197,682.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. CHARLEY C. Coon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erin, in the county of Houston and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Caskets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to caskets adapted to be used for preparing bodies for burial and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a casket which may be used for burial purposes and also to supply in conjunction with the said casket means for use in embalming the body, for retaining the same at a low degree of temperature and for supporting the body in an inclosed condition prior to burial.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the casket;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same cut on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
The casket includes a case 1 which may be of any design or configuration and which has applied to its sides plates 2. Lugs 3 are mounted upon the plates 2. Legs 4 are pivotallv connected with the plates 2 and the said legs at the same end of the casket are connected together by means of braces 5.
When the legs 4 are swung down and engaged with the lugs 3 of the plates 2 the case 1 may be supported in an elevated position upon a floor or other level surface and when the legs 4 are folded along the sides of the case 1 this case may rest upon pedestals or may be easily and quickly inserted in a hearse-or removed therefrom. This case 1 is provided with a hinged top 6, the members of the said hinges being separable in order that the top may be completelv detached from the case when desired. Hangers 7 may be engaged with the upper edges of the sides of the case 1 and they may support a frame 8 in an elevated position above the bo tom of the case. The frame 8 is pro ided with suitable cross bars or rods 9 upon which the corpse may be placed. A section 10 is hingedlv connected with the frame 8 and is adapted to support the head of the corpse. Bods 11 are connected with the frame 8 and may be adjustably attached to the section 10 whereby the section may be held at a desired angle with relation to the frame 8 thus supportin" the head of the corpse in an elevated position. Hooks 12 are pivotally connected with the section 10 and may be enga ed over pins 13 attached to the sides of the frame 8 whereby the said section 10 may be held in alinement with the frame 8. If desired the legs 4 and the plates 2 hereinbefore described mar be attached to the frame 8 whereby the said frame may be supported upon a floor or other level surface independently of the hangers 7. Eyes 14 are mounted at the side members of the frame 8 and hooks 15 may be engaged in the said eyes for lifting and carrying the frame 8. Should it be desired to support the frame 8 in an inclined position in the case 1, one end of the frame is supported upon han ers 7 located in the vicinity of one end of the case and the other end of the frame or its extension section 10 may be permitt to rest upon the bottom of the case. When the frame and its extension are in an inclined position the corpse may be supported in an inclined position in order to drain the same. A pan 16 may be positioned in the lower portion of the case 1 and may contain a quantity of broken ice whereby the corpse which is supported above may be refrigerated and retained at a desired low degree of temperature for preservation purposes. The pan 16 is provided with a drain pipe 17 through which the water from the melted ice may gravitate.
It is apparent that the casket and its attachment may be used in many diflerent ways or manipulated in order to facilitate the process of embalming or the process of preservation.
From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings. it will be seen that a burial casket of simple and durable structure is provided and that in combination with the said casket attachments and appliances may be used to facilitate embalming and preservation of a corpse.
Having described the invention what is claimed is In combination with a case having a hinged top adapted to shut in close contact with the edges of the body of the case, whereby the case is hermetically sealed,
hangers adapted to engage the edges of the body of the case While the same is in a inner surfaces of the hangers whereby the sealed condition, a frame adapted to be reframe is held spaced from the case, said ceived in the case and adapted to be suplegs when extended adapted to hold the 10 ported in a relatively low position therein frame in a relatively elevated position in the by the hangers, and legs pivoted at the case.
outer surfaces of the sides of the frame and In testimony whereof I affiX my signature. adapted to lie between the frame and the CHARLLY COMNE-ALIOUS COOK.
