UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS NEARING, OF MORRIS RUN, PENNSYLVANIA.
BLAcKlNG-CASING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lett-ers Patent No. 532,283, dated January 8, 1895 Application led April 23, I 894.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS NEARING, of Morris Run, in the county of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Blacking-Casing, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved blacking casing, which is comparatively simple and durable in construction, and arranged in such a manner as to conveniently contain blacking, a dauber, and a brush which can be at any time removed for use in blacking boots, shoes, dac.
The invention consists of a casing adapted to receive a brush, the back of which forms the lid for the said'casing.
The invention also consists in certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specitication,. in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure lis a plan view of the improvement, with parts in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement, on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; and Fig. 3l is a transverse section of the saine, on the line 3-3 of Fig. l.
The improved blacking casing is provided with a suitably constructed box or casing A, preferably made of sheet metal and formed with the two side pockets A and A2, and upwardly-extending ianges VA3, forming an opening to give access to the interior of the box. The side pockets A and A2 are adapted to receive a dauber B and blacking bottle C respectively, the latter containing a sulhcient amount of blacking for shoes, boots, dac., or other suitable material may form the contents of the bottle.
The dauber Bis held in place in its side pocket A by a suitable spring D, held on one end of the casing or box A, and a similar spring D serves to hold the bottle C in position in its side pocket A2.
Into thebox or casing A, and between the dauber B and the bottle C, extend the bristles of a brush E, having its back E forming a cover for the top opening of the box, as The back E of the brush E is preferably covered or pro- Serial No. 508,655. (No model.)
vided with a metallic plate E2, formed on its sides with downwardly-extending springs E3, adapted to engage the anges A8, so as to securely lock the brush E in place in the opening of the box or casing A,whereby the back of the brush forms the lid for the said casing or box. The ends F.4 of the back of the brush E preferably extend a short distance beyond the ends of the casing or box A, so that the operator can conveniently lift the brush E out of its position in case it is desired to use the brush, or to give access to the side compartments A or A2, to remove either the dauber B or the blacking bottle C.
A device of the kind described and shown in the drawings can be very cheaply manufactored, takes up very little room, and. can be conveniently placed in a valise, trunk or other traveling article, to be at any time within easy reach of the traveler.
Having thus described my invention, I
'claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A blacking casing, comprising a box having an open top, and a brush provided with side springs and forming a lid to the box, substantially as shown and described.
2. A blacking casing, comprising a box having an open top, and a brush provided with side springs and projecting ends to form a lid to the box, substantially as shown and described.
- 3. Ablacking casing, comprisinga box having an opening in its top, and a brush adapted to form a cover for the opening, the said brush having its back covered with a metallic plate formed on its sides with downwardly extending springs adapted to hold the brush in place in the opening, substantially as shown and described. I
4. A blacking casing, comprising a box formed with side pockets for the purpose speciiied and having a central longitudinal opening in its top `giving access to the side pockets, and a brush adapted to be held in the central portion of said box between the side pockets, substantially as shown and described.
` Louis NEARING.
