IMPROVED SALVE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,198, dated August 1, 1865.
To all whom it may conaarn:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SLAPE, of Salem, Salem county, New Jersey, haveinvented an Improved Salve; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. a
My improved salve is composed of linseedoil, red lead, (in powder,) and red oil, or olive- .oil, and the blossoms of the St. Johns wort,
(Hypericum perforatum) the difl'erent materials being used in such proportions as may be foundexpedient. In mostinstances,however,I prefer to combine them in aboutequal proportions. Each of the materials is then heated separately, or all are mixed together and boiled until the mass becomes of a dark brown color. It should then be removed from the fire and deposited in boxes to harden, when it will be ready for use. In removing the composition from the box a heated knife or other instrument should be used, the salve being then applied in the same manner as an ordinary salve.
