LIFE-SAVING GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,269, dated Tune 3, 1890.
Application filed December 12,1889- Serial No. 333,563 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. GRADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVater-Proof Coats, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an ordinary Water-proof coat with an appliance by means of which, in case of an emergency, it may be used as a life-saving garment, by causing the person wearing it at such times, if thrown into the water, to float; and it consists in applying to the inside of the coat, about the waist and shoulders, an additional thickness of water-proof material in such a manner as to form separate air-tight compartments for holding air and Water, and in supplying each of said compartments with a flexible tube, the outer end of which shall be convenient to the mouth of the wearer of said coat.
The accompanying drawing is a view of the inside of a water-proof coat supplied with my invention.
The drawing represents an ordinary waterproof coat, to the inside of which, about the waist and shoulders,is cemented on the lines 8 a piece of water-proof material in such a manner as to form the air-tight compartm cuts (1 d and b. from or near the waist-line to the line of the collar of the coat, and when the compartment is not inflated has the appearance of a lining. The compartment d d is provided with the flexible tube 0, of a length so that its outer end may be brou ghtto the mouth of the wearer This piece of material extends of the coat. The tube 0- is provided with a clip or compress f, by means of which the opening in the tube maybe completely closed when desired. The compartment 1) is provided with a flexible tube a and compress g, in all respects the same as that of the compartment The operation of my invention is as follows: When it is desired to use the coat on a lifesaving garment, the compress f is loosened and the end of the tube 0 placed between the lips, when, by blowing, the compartment 01 d is filled with air. The compress f is then operated to close the tube.
The compartment 1) is designed to hold fresh water for drinking purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
A water-proof coat having a water-proof lining secured to the inside of said garment in such a manner as to form two separate airtight compartments, one for containing air and the other for holding fresh water, flexible tubes communicating with each of said compartments and having their free ends Within reach of the mouth of the wearer, whereby air can be conveyed to one compartment and water taken from the other, and means for closing said tubes to retain the contents of said compartments, substantially as shown and described.
