To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, PETER WASKIN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Combined Rain-Coats and Life-Preservers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to wearing apparel and more particularly to combination garment comprising a rain coat and life preserver.

The object of the invention is to provide a garment which may be worn eitheras a rain coat or life preserver, and which will protect the wearer from the weather when used as a rain coat, and which will effectively keep the wearer afloat and also keep the body from coming in contact with the water when employed as a life preserver.

A further object of the invention is to provide a garment of the class described, containing marked and important improvements over the garment disclosed in my prior Patent No. 1,130,77 8, issued to me the 9th day of March 1915.

Further objects of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter.

The invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location and relative arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth as shown in the accompanying drawing, and finally pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings,Figure 1 is a view in elevation partly broken, showing the interior of a garment embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the exterior of the same. Fig. 8 is a view in front elevation, partly broken, showing the garment employed as a life preserver. Fig. t is a view in section taken on the line 4- t, Fig. 3, and looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 5 is aview in section taken on the line 5, 5, Fig. 3, and looking in the direction of the arrows. Figs. 6 and 7, are plan detail views of modified forms of air compartments employed in accordance with my invention.

The same part is designated by the same reference numeral wherever it occurs throughout the several views.

In my improved form of garment I provide the usual rain coat 1 provided with an envelop 2 formed by attaching a lining to the garment as indicated by dotted lines Fig. 1, and provided with an opening 3 at the bottom of the coat as shown. Slightly below the arms 4 of the coat, and forming the upper limitvof the envelop 2, are openings 5 leading into leg portions 6, shown in dotted lines, Fig. l, the leg portions which lie between the inner and outer portions of the envelop 2, but independent thereof, and of such length as not to protrude below the bottom of the garment. If desired, and as shown, the foot portions 7 of the legs 6 may be completely inclosed, making the interior of the leg water tight.

The openings 5 may be closed in any suitable manner, such, for instance, as by the laps 8, provided with button holes to engage the buttons 9, as shown.

On either side 'of the envelop 2, and opening therein, are auxiliary pockets or envelops 10, which are comparatively large adjacent to the envelop 2, and converge to a small outlet 11 to which may be attached any suitable wrist band to prevent water from entering the pockets or envelops 10, such for instance as a wrist band 12 of elastic rubber. Formed on the inner surface of the interior portion of the envelop 2 is an air-tight compartment 13, substantially in the shape of a horse-shoe, as shown.

The compartments, pockets or envelops hereinbefore described, may be formed in any suitable manner to make the same air tight. Where rubber is employed as the material of the garment, I have found it advantageous to employ rubber cement, and to vulcanize the seams of the respective compartments, but I am not to be limited, in the broad scope of my invention, to the specific construction of the garment.

It will be seen that as the pockets or compartments 10, the envelop 2, are all formed by the inner and outer surfaces of the coat, and as the legs 6 hang in the compartment 2, the coat looks, both inside and outside, like an ordinary garment.

To convert the coat into a life preserver the flaps 8 are opened, and the legs of the wearer are inserted in the legs 6. The coat is turned inside out by means of the envelop 2, the legs projecting through the opening 3 thereof. The arms of the wearer protrude through the compartments 10, openings 11,

7' trolled by any suitable means, such as the and wrist bands 12, and the air-tight air compartment 13 which was on the interior of the envelop 2, now will lie, inverted, on the exterior of the garment, and against the chest of the occupant thereof, and the bottom opening 3 of the envelop 2, will inclose the neck of the occupant. The opening 3 may be threaded with strings 15 or other suit-able material to enable the hole 3, to be closed tightly around the neck of the occupant of the garment as shown .inFig.

l/Vhile I have shown a specific struct ure embodying the principles of my invention, it will be readily understood that many changes in detail and in construction w1ll suggest themselves to those skilled in the art without departing from the broad scope of my invention as defined in the claims.

Therefore, what I claim as new and useful and of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,

1. A combined rain coat and life preserver including an envelop formed in the lining thereof, leg portions opening through said lining, and lying in sald envelop and 7 arm portions opening into said envelop.

' 2. A combined rain coat and life preserver including an envelop formed in the lining thereof, leg portions opening through said lining and lying in said envelop and arm portions opening into said envelop and through the'edge of said coat out into the air.

3. A garment of the class described com- ,prising a reversible envelop formed in the lining thereof, leg portions opening through said'lining and lying in said envelop, and arm compartments opening into said envelop. 4. A garment of the class described, comprising a reversible envelop formed in the lining thereof, .leg portions opening through said lining and lying in said'envelop, arm compartments opening into said envelop, and an inflatable compartment secured to said lining in said envelop.

6. A garment of the class described including an envelop portion formed in the lining thereof, said envelop being open at its lower extremity, leg portions opening through said lining and lying in said envelop and adapted to extend through the opening at the bottom thereof to allow the envelopto be reversed thereover and to inclose the body of the occupant, the bottom opening being adapted to fit around the neck of said occupant. 7. Agarment of the class described including an envelop portion formed in the lining thereof, said envelop being open at its lower extremity, leg portions opening through said lining and lying in said envelop and adapted to extend through the opening at the bottom thereof to allow the envelop to be reversed thereover and to inclose the body of the occupant, the bottom opening being adapted to fit around the neck of said occupant and arm portions leading out of said reversed envelop.

8. A garment of the class described including an envelop portion formed in the lining thereof, said envelop being open at its lower extremity, leg portions opening through said lining and lying in said envelop and adapted to extend through the opening at the bottom thereof to allow the envelop to be reversed thereover and to inclose the body of the occupant, the bottom opening being adapted to fit around the neck of said occupant and means for securing said bottom opening. around the occupants neck.

9. A garment of the class described inlining thereof, said envelop being open at its lower extremity, leg portions opening through said lining and lying in said envelop and adapted to extend through the opening at the bottom thereof to allow the envelop to be reversed thereover and to inclose the body of the occupant, the bottom opening being adapted to fit around the neck of said occupant and means for securing said bottom opening around the occupants neck and a detachable collar for said neck portion to make the same air tight.

A garment of the class described including an envelop portion formed in the lining thereof, said envelop being open at its lower extremity, leg portions opening through said lining and lying in said envelop and adapted to extend through the opening at the bottom thereof to allow the envelop to be reversed thereover and to inclose the body of the occupant, the bottom opening being adapted to fit around the neck of said occupant and an inflatable compartment forming a portion of said lining.

11. A garment of the class described including an envelop portion formed in the lining thereof, said envelop being open at its lower extremity, leg portions opening through said lining and lying in said envelop and adapted to extend through the opening at the bottom thereof to allow the envelop to be reversed thereover and to inclose the body of the occupant, the bottom.
