BARREL COVER.
No. 4013707. Patented Apr. 16, 1889.

wwzim UNITE STATES PATE T OFFiCE.
lrEORGE IV. LINDSEY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO JOSEPH B. ZUDDING, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA.
BARREL-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.401,707, dated April 16, 1889.
Application filed November 6, 1888. Serial No. 290,100- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. LINDSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have in- 5 vented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hinged cover for attachment to barrels, and is provided with T means which enable it to be readily attached and detached.
The invention is illustrated in the accompan yin g drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of the cover. Fig. 2 I is an inverted view of the cover. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a barrel and cover. Fig. 4
is a side view of part of a barrel, showing the cover in position; and Fig. 5 is a view of one of the clips.
The cover is made in two sections,A A, connected by hinges 5. One section, A, is provided on its under surface with two clips, 0, which are adapted to grip the chine or rim of a barrel, as shown in Fig. 3. These clips consist of a metal plate having its two ends bent at an angle and inclined toward each other, and its central part, (Z, between the said two ends, is flat, so as to rest against the lower surface of the cover. A nailorscrew, e, passed through this flat center serves to fasten the clip to the cover. The two ends of the clip are yielding and springy and thereby serve to grip the barrel-rin'l.
Itwill beunderstood that the two ends, which 3 5 incline toward each other, take astride of the barrel-rim, and thereby the position of the cover is determined and it is properly located. The same section, A, of the cover is also provided with fastening-hooks F, which have at one end an eye, g, by which a staple or screw- 40 eye, 9', secures it to the cover-top, and a rightangle bend, it, and at the other end a bent hook-point, i, which may be driven or forced into the staves k of the barrel. The hooks E and clips C together serve to secure this section of the cover to the barrel in a rigid manner.
A dust-strip, Z, of sheet metal or other suitable material is secured to the lower surface of section A and projects horizontally below the crack or joint between the two sectionsA A. The top of the cover-section A has two cleats,
m, to which ahandle, n,is attached. The ends m of the two cleats serve as a stop device when the cover-section A is raised or turned up, as in Fig. 4.
This cover may be readily applied to a barrel and will be held to it rigidly, and may be as readily removed.
Having described my invention, I claim A cover made in two sections which are connected by hinges, and one section provided on its under side with clips to take astridle of the barrel-rim, and also provided with fasteninghooks whose ends maybe driveninto the barrel-stave".
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE \Y. LINDSEY.
