Be it known that I, JosnrH CAPPEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use- I fill Improvements in Barrel-Head-Securing Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to means for securing the heads of barrels against displacement. It pertains more particularly to a togglelock by which to secure in place the heads of barrels of that type in which vegev tables and like goods are packed ment.

Barrels for the above purpose are usually of such a construction as to be easily broken in handling, and especially during shipment the heads being broken out by pressure of the contents of the barrel due to the contained weight and the method of handling.

for ship- It is the purpose of my invention to provide a very staunch locking arrangement in the form of a toggle that can be readily attached in a moment or two after the heads have been put in place and which may be as readily detached, there beingseveral of these used at each end of the barrel, to the end that the said heads will be held permanently in position under the most severe or rough usuage.

1 indicates the staves of the barrel, 2 one of the heads, 3 the usual twin hoops at each end, and 4 the intermediate hoops or those at the bilge of the barrel.

My invention, in the present instance, includes two parts of sheet metal which are preferably formed by means of dies. One of these portions, which I shall term the I main portion, is designated as a whole by the being preferably bent slightly at an angle to the main body. At one or more places in said main body near an extremity is a slot 7 adjacent to which the metal is slightly bent from the plane of said body, as at 8, the purpose of which will appear later. The extremity of 6 opposite that having the slot is recurved forming an arch 9 terminating in a lip or flange 10 lying in a plane substantially perpendicular to the plane of the body 6. 1 v I 11 indicates, as a whole, the other part of the toggle which is made including a portion 12 and a head 13 forming a T which head is slightly bent out of the plane of said portion 12. The extremity of 12, opposite the head 13, is preferably slightly bent from the plane of 12 and a prong 14; terminates its end, being bent at an acute angle to the metal of which it is a part as more clearly shown in Figures-5 and 6.

The assembled relation of the toggle parts is shown in the figures just named wherein it is seen that the portion 11 has been inserted in one of the slots 7, the lowermost one, the head 13 resting upon the portion 8 adjacent thereto, it being observed, as in Figure 5, that theprong 14 extends from the same side of the toggle as the arch 9 and lip or flange 10.

The end twin hoops 3 are usually of a standard width and are placed in close relation at the extreme ends of the staves so that the main portion 5 may be of a standard length where, when the portion 11 has been inserted as described and shown, the head 13 may be engaged with the lower edge of the lowermost hoop as viewed in said Figure 5, the relation being such, with the lip or flange 10 resting upon the head 2, that when the portion 11 is forced downwardly, the said head in effectwill be clamped in place, the hoops being always firmly nailed in position, preventing the head leaving its position. I V p It will be clear, that the end of the portion 6 with which the portion ll has engagement will be carried inward toward thebarrel beyond a line drawn through the lip or. flange 10 and the edge of the head 13 where it engages the hoop thereby forming a positive look after the manner of toggles. That this position may be permanent, the prong 14 is driven into the barrel-stave. In addition to the prong, one or more holes may be punched in the portion 12 to receive a nail or nails, one of which is indicated at 15'. But if de sired, the prong may be eliminated, or the prong or the nail may be used separately.

The metal is bent at 8, as described, and the head 13 is slightly bent away from the plane of 12, as described, in order that the parts may have free movement relatively and permit proper locking, and in fact, all of the slight bends described, are provided to that end, the bend in the extremity of the portion 12 having the prong l4 admitting of that extremity being carried close to the barrel to get the best use of the said prong.

As will be observed in Figure 2, the toggles are each placed so as to engage the ends of the portions of the head 2 at their places of meeting in order to better have complete control of the latter.

The plurality of slots 7 is preferable, in that should there happen to he a considerable deviation from the usual construction of a barrel or the location of the hoops 3, the portion 11 may be positioned in that slot best suited to the existing conditions.

My whole purpose, as may be seen, is that of furnishing a toggle lock for the heads of barrels that can be easily attached without securing means, other than afforded by the barrel itself, preferably employing one of the hoops of the barrel as the means ready at hand with which the device can be most readily engaged for the clamping act, and'admitting of the instant removal of the device for quick and ready application to other barrels, but the clamp may be adapted to engage a part of the barrel such as a shoulder created by providing a socket (not shown) in the wood.

While I have described a construction as one-of the forms of my invention, other equivalent forms may be adapted with changes such as will fall within the claims herein.

I claim:

1. In a barrel-head securing device, a toggle including two portions, one of which is arranged to engage the saidhead, the other portion adapted to engage a projecting part of the barrel structure adapted to secure said, barrel head structure in fixed relation.

2. In av device of the nature described for barrels, atoggle including a part extending over the chime of the barrel-stave upon the barreLhead, and a part engaging the first named. part adapted to engage a projection at the side of the barrel whereby to secure the said head and the barrel staves relatively.

3. In combination with a barrel, 'a toggle including a part engaging the head of the barrel, and a part in the form of a lever operatively connected with the first named part adapted to engage beneath one of the barrel-hoops whereby to secure the head relatively and permanently to the latter.

4. In combination with a barrel, a toggle including a part engaging the head of the barrel, a part in the form of a lever operatively connected with the first named part adapted to engage beneath one of the barrel-hoops whereby to secure the head relatively and permanently to the latter, and means to secure the second named part to the barrel.

5. In combination with a barrel, a toggle including a part engaging the head of the barrel, a part in the form of a lever operatively connected with the first named part adapted to engage beneath one of the barrel-hoops whereby to secure the head relatively and permanently to the latter, and a prong on the second named part adapted to be driven into the barrel.

6. In combination with a barrel and its head, of a toggle comprising a part adapted at one end to engage upon the outer surface of the head and at its other end depending at the side of the barrel, a second part fulcrumed on the depending end of the first adapted at one end to engage a projection on the barrel, and means to secure its other end to said barrel.

7. A toggle including a. main portion having a hook formed at one end and having a slot in its other end, and a second separate portion adapted to freely seat in said slot, and provided with a prong at one end extending at an angle to the plane thereof.

8. A toggle including a portion having a hook at one end, and at its other end having a seat to receive a second portion, a second separate portion adapted to rest in said seat having a prong at one end and a series ofholes.

9. An article of manufacture comprising a plate having one end formed into a hook, and having in its other end an opening, and a plate to enter said opening having a head at one end to engage the plate at said opening, the second named plate having a prong at its other end struck up therefrom at an acute angle thereto.
