ALBERT R. PRITCI-IARD AND THOMAS L. FER-BALL, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
HANDLE FOR TEA-KETTL-ES.
Patented Oct. 3,1911.
Application filed July 14, 1911. Serial No. 638,550.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT R. Pnrrorr- ARD and THOMAS L. FERRALL, citizens of the United States, and residents of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Tea-Kettles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to handles suitable for use on teakettles and various other vessels, of the type comprising a bail-portion of bent wire and a sleeve or grip of wood, or other material, mounted upon the middle of the bail-portion.
Handles of the type in question are usually constructed by first passing a length of straight wire through the grip-member and thereafter bending the wire to the proper form, and polishing or otherwise finishing the wire. This method of construction is unsatisfactory, however, both because the grip-member, which is usually made of wood, is frequently defaced in the process of finishing the bail-portion, and also because it is difficult, aft-er bending a wire, to remove the marks of the bending instrumentalities therefrom in the presence of the grip-member.
The object of the present invention is to avoid these disadvantages in a novel and simple manner, and to this end the invention consists in a construction in which the bail-portion is made in two parts, which are first bent to shape and finished, and then forced into the gripmember, being secured together at their adjacent ends in the manner hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a side-elevation, partly in vertical section, of a handle embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1'; and Fig. 3 is a partial vertical section, showing a modified form of fastening device for the bail-members.
This invention is illustrated as embodied in a bail-shaped handle which is pivoted at its ends, by means of rivets 4, to ears or lugs 5 which may constitute portions of a tea-kettle, or other vessel, of which the remainder is not illustrated.
The bail-portion of the handle comprises .two bent wires or rods 6 and 7, which preferably are first bent to form and polished or otherwise finished. The upper ends of the bail members 6 and 7 engage each other at the middle of the handle, being reduced in thickness or halved together so that they may overlap, as illustrated, without increas ing the diameter of the bail-portion at this joint. Accordingly, the two bail-members may be thrust into the longitudinal perforation in the grip-member, this member being of any ordinary or suitable form, and preferably consisting principally of wood. The overlapping ends of the bail-members are perforated vertically, so that when the bail-members have been inserted in the gripmember the perforations are in vertical alinement. The grip-member is also drilled or otherwise provided with a vertical socket, extending from the bottom of the gripmember in line with the perforations and part way through the grip-member. Accordingly, after the parts have been assembled as just described, a pin 9 may be forced into the socket and through the perforations in the ends of the bail-members. This pin fits tightly in the perforations, being preferably tapered for this purpose, so that it not only locks the bail-members against enclwise movement, but also secures them rigidly against relative rotation, and prevents the grip-member from turning on the bailportion. After the pin has been driven home the lower end of the socket is closed by a plug 10 of wood, or other material,- which may be held in place either by friction or by adhesive material, and after the plug has been so fixed it serves not only to retain the pin in operative position, but also to produce a smooth finish and an unbroken surface on the grip-member.
In place of the tapered pin shown in Fig. 1 a wood-screw 11 may be employed, as shown in Fig. 3, the construction being otherwise the same as in Figs. 1 and 2.
e claim 1. A handle for tea-kettles and the like having, in combination, a bail comprising two bent wire members having reduced overlapping ends at the middle portion of the bail, said ends being transversely perforated, a grip-member closely embracing said ends, and a transverse pin engaging the grip-member and the perforations in said ends to fix the parts together.
2. A handle for tea-kettles and the like having, in combination, a bail comprising two bent wire members having reduced overlapping ends at the middle portion of the bail, said ends being transversely perforated, a grip-member closely embracing said ends and having a socket extending upwardly above the lower end of the socket, and a plug closing the lower end of the socket and 2.3 securing the pin in place.
