STOVE-PIPE ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,884, dated August 13, 1889.

To all whom v it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH I3. IJEACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roberts, in the county of Ford and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stove-Pipe Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a stove-pipe attachment designed to retain the ends of the stove-pipe in the proper position in the chimney-opening and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of parts, fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View of a stove-pipe provided with the attachment arranged iirthe operative position in a chimney. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the manner in which the detents engage the notches in the retaining-bar. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a stove-pipe, illustrating the manner of securing the sections together. Fig. 5 is a detail view to show the manner in which the detents engage the notches in the retaining-bar.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the stove-pipe, which is inserted in an opening in the chimney, as shown in Fig. 1, and B designates a clasp, which consists of a collar encircling the stove-pipe and provided at its free ends with the outwardly-entending parallel ears O O, and the set-screw D, engaging registering perforations in the said ears and adapted when tighten ed to draw the free ends of the collar together.

E designates the retaining-bar,which bears against the side of the pipe under the clasp, and is provided in its opposite edges with the notches or serrations F F, and the free end of this bar is bent to form the perpendicular portion G, which engages within the opening in the chimney, in the manner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

The clasp is further provided near its free ends with inwardly extending detents H II, which are adapted to engage the notches or serrations in the retainingbar, and thereby lock the said bar firmly to the stove-pipe when the set-screw is tightened. When the setscrew is loosened, these detents are removed from the notches or serrations, and the retaining bar is free to move.

The operation of this device will now be readily seen. The clasp is arranged on the end of the pipe which is to be inserted in the chimncy-opening, and the retaining-bar is inserted between the detents II II. The end of the pipe is now inserted in the chimney and the perpendicular portion of the retainingbar is arranged against the inner surface of the same, after which the set-screw is tightened, thereby engaging the said detents in the notches or serrations of the retaining-bar and locking the latter firmly to the pipe.

The device is simple, cheap, durable, and effective, and may be readily and quickly attached to any stove-pipe.

In Fig. 4 of the drawings I have illustrated a modification of the invention, showing the manner of securing the sections A A together. The section A is provided with a retaining-bar E and a clasp l3, similar to those already described, with the exception that the retaining-bar has no perpendicular flange G, and the section A has a clasp whose detents engage the notches of the retaining-bar and securely hold the sections A and A together, as will be readily understood.

Having thus described the invention, I claim- 1. In a stove-pipe fastener, the encircling clasp consisting of a collar provided near its free ends withdetents II II, and the retaining bar arranged between the clasp and the stovepipe 'and provided with notched or serrated edges to be engaged by the said detents, substantially as specified 2. In a stove-pipe fastener, the clasp encircling the same and provided at its free ends with the detents II II, the set-screw engaging the free ends of the clasp, and the notched or serrated retaining-bar passing between the said detents and provided with a flange to engage the chimney, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
