HEAD BEST FOR BARBERS CHAIRS.
N0. 377,147. Patented Jan; 31, 1888 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
N4 PETERS, Pnowumo n her. Washin lnn. D. C
Nrrn STATES- CHARLES XV. DELANEY, OF HAMMOND, INDIANA.
HEAD-REST FOR BARBERS CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,147, dated January 31, 1888.
Application filed August 19, 1887.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. DELANEY, of Hammond, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Head-Rest for Barbers Chairs, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists of the special construction of the head-rest, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which'similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 shows the back of a chair having my invention applied thereto, and shown elevated in full lines and lowered in dotted lines; and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the chair and head-piece.
To the back of the chair A is secured the circular plate B, from which projects a pivot, C, which forms the bearing for the head-rest bar D, which is slotted at d to span the said pivot, as shown. The said bar D is held upon the pivot O by the capplate E, fastened to the outer end of the pivot G. The upper end of the bar D is turned outward to form ashoulder, as shown at d, and to it is hinged the pillow F, so that said pillow may be turned back to the opposite position to that shown in Fig. 2, or
turned to the position shown in full lines, where it rests upon the shoulder (2 in position to support the head of a person sitting in the chair.
Serial No. 247,368. (No model.)
The bar D, and with it the pillow F, may be vertically adjusted and held at any desired elevation by the catch or pawl G, secured to the outer surface of the plate E and engaging with the notches a a, made in the outer surface of the bar D.
In shaving, the bar D and pillow B will be raised or lowered tosuit the customer; but in cutting hair the pillow F will be turned back upon its hinge and the bar D turned laterally upon the pivot C to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, where it will not be in the way. By this arrangement the trouble and annoyance due to the taking off and of replacing the headrest, asin common barberehairs, are wholly avoided, and the construction is cheap, durable, and practical.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The plate B, adapted to be secured to the back of a chair and provided with the pivot C, in combination with the slotted bar D, spring-pawl G, and hinged pillow F at the upper end of the bar D, the said bar being formed with the teeth a to receive the spring pawl, substantially as described.
CHARLES V. DELANEY.
