UNITED STATES JACOB BAUGHMAN AND BENNET B. CHALK, OF MOUNT WASHINGTON, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT lN CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 136,956, dated March 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, JAooB BAUGHMAN and BENNET R. CHALK, of Mount Washington, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chairs; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being I had to the accompanying'drawing forming a part of this specification.
The invention consists in improving the ordinary mode of applying spring-backs to sewing-machine chairs, so that any old and ordinary chair may readily receive a spring-back, and so that the back may be rigidly held at any point of adjustment by means hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a detail view.-
A represents a chair seat supported on legs B is a metal plate having the backwardly-inclined upright stop I), the perforated vertical lug I), and the two holes for screws 1) b 0 is a bifurcated transversely-pertorated plate having the shank c, by which it may be secured within the large vertical end round 61, and provided with transverse perforation, by which the pin or pivot E may hold the plates B 0 together. This construction allows the back D to be 7 moved rearwardly by the weight of sitter, and
forwardly by the spring F, which is coiled aroundthe arm G and connected at its upr er and lower ends to the pin and bolt clg, respectively. The arm G, of which there is one on each side of the chair, is provided at its lower end with a slot through which a bolt projecting from the edge of the seat protrudes. On the outer end of this bolt is a clampnut, H, between which and a collar, g, on the bolt, the arm can be secured, and thereby the chairback rigidly held in any desired position.
By loosenih g the clamp-nuts the back is free to follow the forward and backward movement of the sitter.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The chair-back rounds (I d provided each with a plate, 0 c, and combined with seat A having the plate B provided with stop b and perforated lug N, as and for the purpose described.
2. The spring F, slotted arm G, and levernut H, combined with a chair having a pivoted back, as and for the purpose set forth.-
