IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS TO THE BACKS 0F SEATS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,009, dated April 23, 1872.

To all who: it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY M. BEIDLER, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachment for Backs of Chairs and other Seats; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in a leaf, or its equivalent, hinged to the back of a chair or other seat, which leaf may be provided with a mirror or picture in the center, and supported, when in use, by a bracket, hook, or other suitable device and when not in use drawn and held close to the back of the chair by a spring, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth. I

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair with my attachment thrown up for use, and Fig.2 is a side view of the same, showing the attachment thrown down.

A represents a chair or other seat, to the back of which is hinged a leaf or board, B, which may be thrown up at any angle desired,

as shown in Fig. 1, and supported by a hook, (J, and eye-bolts, or a bracket, or any other suit able device. When not in use this leaf is drawn close to the back of the chair or seat by means of any suitable spring, D, so as not to interfere with any person passing behind the seat.

This leaf may be attached to any chair or other seat in theatres, churches, cars, or any public or private places, and is of great convenience for placing hats, fans, books, &c., upon.

A mirror, E, may be placed in the center of the leaf, if so desired; and in churches a picture, representing the Saviour or some sacred scene, may be substituted for the mirror. The space around the mirror or picture, or, when the same is not-used, the entire surface of the leaf, may be used for advertising purposes, if so desired.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the, hinged leaf B, a brace, O, and a spring, Dhvith the back of a seat, A, all as and for the purposes herein set forth.
