Description

(No Model.)
U. H. DANA;
METALLIC BOX STRAPPING.
Patented Dec. 13, 1887.
mvcwkoz m 9% 7 that the metal on either side of the holeis of UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I CHARLES H. DANA, OF WEST LEBANON, NEWHAMPSHIRE.
METALLIC BOX-STRAPPING.
SPEQIFI'CATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,587, dated December 13, 1887. Application filed May 28,1887. Serial No. 239,694. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. DANA, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Lebanon,-in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements -in Metallic Box- Strappiugs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference-being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a ready-made metallic strapping for boxes, one in which theshape of the nail-hole willnot weaken the strength 0T the materiahth'edrivennail spreading open the walls of said holes and contracting the strap in length, thus tightening the strap about the box in a high degree.
Inthe drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the strap applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a section of the strap.
Like letters refer to like parts.
A is the strap. It may be made of any suitable soft flexible metal. At proper intervals there are made aperturesaa for the fasteningnails.
shaped, but may be. oval. It will be not-iced These holes are shown as diamond-- equal width, and it is important to so make them,so as not to weaken the strap. This cannot be done by adie which cuts away a substantial portion of the metal, but may be done by making a slight cut through the metal and spreading or wedging it out laterally to form the desired opening, whieh will have itslateral walls of equal thickness without any of the material being taken away. A punch can easily be designed for performing this operation.
In Fig. Ithe strapis shown applied to abox, B. The nails 0, when driven in, wedge open the metal forming the sides of the holes, and
also contract the length of the strap, tightening it about the box in a high degree.
Having tully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is'- A solid'metallic boxstrap having at inter vals cuts and having the material on each side of the cuts spread laterally, whereby the strap is in no way weakened, as and for the purpose stated.
' Intestimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two. witnesses.
CHARLES H. DANA.
