LAP-RING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,976, dated August 31, 1897.
Application filed February 25, 1897. Serial No. 624,966. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GRIFFIN GATE- WOOD, a citizen of United States, residing at Des Arc, in the county of Prairie and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lap-Rings; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a lap-ring, or what is sometimes called a detachable link 5 and it consists of two halves pivoted together 'at one end, each half having a part broken out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention closed. Fig. 2 is an edge view of my invention closed. Fig. 3 is a face view of my invention partly opened. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
1 is one half of the link having in one end a perforation 2 and a dovetail slot 3 and an opening or a gap cut in one side between the points 4 and 5. It will be observed that the curve of the dovetail slot is concentric with the perforation 2 and that the ends 4 5 are out under or are undercuts. The other half a of the link is provided with a perforation b, that has in one side an opening between the points 0 and d. These points 0 and d are also undercuts similar to points 4 and 5, and the half 1 has an enlargement indicated by the dotted lines 6 f, which are out exactly to correspond with the points 0 d and fill up the space-between said points 0 and d, and the half Z) is provided with an enlargement g, which exactly fills in the space between points 4 and 5. The ends of these enlargements are undercut, so that when the ends 4 and 5 are slippedin place they are dovetailed.
The lower or free end of the part a has on its inner face a dovetail lug h, that exactly fits in the dovetail groove 3,so that these two free ends may not fly open.
It will also be observed that the dovetail cuts at 4 5 and c and d and the ends of the enlargements g and the enlargements between the points e and f also prevent the link from flying open.
The two parts 1 and a are pivoted together by a bolt 00. 1
It is apparent that time and the strain upon the link will soon wear the bolt '00 and the perforations 2 and b, and the two halves will become loose and liable to dangle and fiymore or less apart when the chain in which they work is loose, hence the necessity and the great advantage of the dovetail cuts, as described.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is H 1. The detachable link, consisting of the half 1, having-in its lower end and inner face the dovetail groove 3, and in one side the opening between the dovetail ends 4 and 5; and onv the other side a dovetail enlargement to fill the opening between the dovetail ends 0 and d, of the half a; the halfa, having the opening between the dovetail ends 0 and d;
'the dovetail enlargement 'g, to fill the out between the ends 4 and 5, of'half 1; and dovetail lug h, adapted to fit the groove 3, both halves pivoted together by the bolt to, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
2. The detachable link, consisting of two half-links pivoted together at one end, each half-link having its inner face flattened and havingapo'rtion cut away to provide an opening, one side having a dovetail groove 3, and the other a dovetail lug adapted to fi-tsaid groove, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
