To all whom it may concern:

' Be it known that I, SEWELL A. linear, a

citizen of the United States, residing inlthe city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Interlocking Removable Barrel-Heads, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to 'an interlocking removable head for barrels, tubs, buckets, drums, etc.

The objects of the invention are, first, to provide a simple, substantial, cheaply manufactured interlecfing barrel head, which is particularly adapted for application to metal barrels and the like, or, in other words, to barrels in which the crozes cannot be expanded; second, to provide an in-- terlocking removable barrel head which can be quickly applied orremoved; and, third, to provide a simple form of lock for keeping'the several parts of the head in interlocked position.

Other objects will hereinafter appear. The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, 1n which- Figure 1 1s a plan view of the barrel head. Fig. 2 is a section on line w-w, Fig. 1, showing the top end of the barrel. Fig. 3 is a interlocked similar view on line 11-12, Fig. 1.

- Referring to the drawings, A indicates the upper end of a non-expansible barrel, or the like; B indicates the croze formed in same; and C indicates the removable head which forms the subject-matter of the present application.

The barrel head is in this, instance sectional and consists of four separate parts which are adapted to be interlocked and which are also adapted to be locked in their ositions. The four separate parts comprising the head areas follows: two semicircular sections?"and? and a central section which is divided into two sepa-' rate pieces, as indicated at Land 5.

Referring to Fi 2, it will be seen that the outer edges 0 the several sections are chamfe'red and chimed in the usual manner, as indicated at 6, to fit the croze of the barrel. The joints between the semicircular sections 2 and 3 and the central section, which consists of the separable pieces 4 and 5, are slightly tapered, as indlcated at 7,

for the purpose of wedging the several pleces into tight engagement with the croze of the barrel'end also to prevent the separate pieces of the central section from fall ing into the barrel.

Suitably secured to the central section 4 by nails or any other suitable means, indicated at 8, is a locking bar 9 and extending through perforations 10 in the opposite section is a wire or like means 11 looking bar may be secured when the parts have been pressed down into the interlocked position indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.

The operation of applying the barrel head will be as follows: The semicircular sections 2 and 3 are first fitted into the croze or the barrel. The ends of the separate sections 4 and 5 are then inserted into the croze of the barrel, between the semicircular outer end of the locking bar 9 to force the,

separable sections 4 and 5, of the central section, down into a horizontal position between the semicircular sections 2 and 3. The downward movement of these separate sections causes the tapered sides 7 to act as a wedge which will force the several separate parts into tight engagement with each other and also with the croze of the barrel. Bar 9 may then be locked by twisting the ends of wlre 11 over the top of the bar, as indicated in Fig. 2. The division of the central section into two separate pieces is of great importance, as it can readily be seen that it would otherwise be impossible to insert the ends of said section into the croze of the barrel.

The materials and finish of the several parts of the barrel may be such as experience' and judgment of the manufacturer maydictate. A barrel head constructed as here shown is simple in construction and unay be quickly applied to or removed from the barrel.

I wish it understood that any other suit able locking means, capable of securing the bar 9 in engagement with section 5, may be used, and I further wish'it understood that I do not wish to limit myself to. the specific design and construction here shown.
