IMPLEMENT FOR SHARPENING TAILORS CHALK.

Be it known that I, ROBERT Wvarnof the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Implements for Sharpening Tailors Chalk, 850., of which the following is a specification.

My improved implement may be employed for sharpening chalk and other marking-crayons or materials for various uses, but is more particularly intended for sharpening the flat and broad pieces of chalk or composition used by tailors and cutters of clothing.

My invention relates to the class of implements for the purpose above described which severally comprise two knives or blades having converging and roughened faces, by which the chalk or marking substance is sharpened, and which are arranged in or above a box to receive the dust and scraps produced in sharpenmg.

I employ in connection with abox two knives or blades having serrated or roughened converging faces, and which are removably secured in the box, so as to afford between them a narrow opening or slot for the fall of dust and chips produced by sliding a piece of chalk or other material between and along the blades or knives. These blades preferably rest at their ends in half-round open bearings formed in the ends of the box, and they are provided with downwardly-extending arms which engage with one or other of a transverse row of retaining-notches formed in the bottom of the 3 5 box. The knives or blades may both be held in place by a single upright bolt, which may be loosened to enable the arms of the knives or blades to be shifted from one to another of the retaining-notches to vary the angle of convergence of the faces of the knives or blades, and which, when tightened, secures the knives or blades immovably in place. The box also has at thesides pockets or receptacles for chalk, "pins, or other articles used by cutters.

The invention consists in novel features of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter described,and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of an implement embodying all the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section thereof on the plane of the dot- Serial No. 302,604. (No model.)

Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.

A designates the box, which may be a light metal casting, and B designates the blades or knives, which have their faces serrated or roughened and converging downward to a narrow opening or slot, 12, between them. To sharpen a piece of chalk,'the piece (3 is placed between the blades or knives, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and moved or slid back and forth while exerting a slight downward pressure upon it. The chips and dust produced in sharpening fall through the slot b into the box A.

. The blades or knives B are removably se cured in the box A. As here shown, the blades or k nives have at the ends half-round journallike portions 1), which rest in half-round open bearings 12 in the ends of the box A, and are drawn down into their bearings and held in place rigidly and immovably in the box A by an upright bolt, 0. This bolt, as here shown, is inserted loosely through the bottom of the box, and its head is countersunk thereinto and adapted for a screw-driver, and to the bolt is fitted a nut, O, which is received in notches or recesses b, formed in the two blades or .knives B.

In order to provide for varying the angle of convergence of the cutting-faces of the blades or knives, I have shown them as provided with downwardly-projecting arms B, the ends of which engage looking or retaining notches 0, arranged in a row transversely across the bottom of the box A. WVhen the arms 13 are brought near together, as shown by full lines in Fig. 2, the faces of the blades or knives B converge at a considerable angle, and the implement is adjusted for thick chalk; and when the arms B are spread toward the positions shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 the angle of convergence of the faces of the blades or knives is more or less decreased.

When desired to vary the angle of convergence of the blades or knives B, all that is necessary is to slacken the bolt 0, so as to release the arms B from the notches c, and then spread said arms apart or bring them toward each other, after which the bolt is tightened to secure the blades or knives in their new positions. To secure the best results, the faces of the blades or knives should extend approximately tangential to the journal portions 1), as shown in Fig. 2.

The box A may have at its sides receptacles or pockets A A for chalk, pins, or other articles used by cutters of clothing.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a box,oftwo blades or knives having serrated or roughened and downwardly-converging faces, between which is a slot or opening, b, said blades or knives being reniovably secured in the box and adjustable to vary the angle of convergence of their faces, substantially as herein described.

2. The combination, with a box having at the ends open bearings, of two blades or knives having serrated or roughened and downwardly-converging faces, and provided at the ends with journal portions fitting said bearings, and a bolt or screw whereby the blades or knives may be drawn downward into their bearings to secure them immovably in place in the box, substantially as herein described.

3. The combination, with a box having at the ends open bearings, of blades or knives resting at the ends in said bearings and having serrated or roughened and downwardly-converging faces and opposite recesses in their inner sides, a bolt or screw inserted upward through the bottom of the box, anda nut fitting the bolt and having a hearing within the op posite recess in the blades or knives, substantially as herein described.

4. The combination, with abox having at the bottom a transverse row of retainingnotches, of blades or knives removably secured in the box and having serrated or roughened" and converging faces and downwardly-extending arms, which engage the retaining-notches and hold the blades or knives in the desired position, substantially as herein described.

5. The combination, with a box, of blades or knives having serrated or roughened and downwardly-converging faces, supported by bearings at the ends of the box,and adjustable in said bearings to vary their angle of convergence, substantially as herein described.

6. The combination, with the box A, having at the bottom a transverse row of retaining notches, c, of the blades B, supported at the ends by bearings in the ends of the box, and having converging roughened faces and downwardly extending arms B, entering said notches, and the bolt 0 and its nut 0', having a bearing upon the blades, whereby said blades may be drawn down into their bearings with their arms in firm engagement with said notches, substantially as herein described.
