Description

(No Model.)
J. N. &&J. T. FIRTH. MEAT HOLDER.
No. 603,560. Patented May 3, 1898.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES N. FIRTH AND JOSEPH T. FIRTH, OF NEWBURG, NEW YORK.
MEAT-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,560, dated May 3,-1898.
Application filed December 14, 1897. Serial No. 661,881- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMns N. FIRTH and JOSEPH T. FIRTH, citizens of the United States, residing at Newburg, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Meat-Holders; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of our invention is to provide a new and useful meat-holder which is simple and durable in construction, and more especially designed for firmly and convenientlyv holding a ham while cutting slices therefrom.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a top plan view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a crosssection taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the jaws. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view showing in position the base of one of the jaws shown in Fig. 5.
The improved holder consists of a suitable base A, which may rest upon a table or bench or be supported in any suitable manner. It is provided on the left with longitudinal slots a, which have enlargements a. It is also provided on the right with a slot a Mounted in the slots a are the movable jaws B, which when tilted are adapted to slide in the slots (1. Each jaw B has on its lower part a central rib Z), and transverse ribs b and b and the lower part is cut away on each side at 12 When it is desired to insert one of the jaws B into the slots at or to move it therein, it is tilted up, so that the rib 19 comes above the surface of the tableA and the rib 19 engages the slot to. It is then slid along until therib 5 comes over one of the enlargements a in the slot at, when it is dropped and held firmly in position. These jaws B may be provided with retaining-teeth, if desired.
On the right of the base A is another movable jaw C, provided with retaining-teeth c. This jaw is retained in the slot at, being provided with slots 0, with which the edgesof the slot a engage.
Mounted in bearings beneath the slot a is a screw D, provided upon the outside of the base with a crank-handle d. This screw passes through an opening 0 in the lower part of the jaw C. This lower part is also provided with an inclined slot 0 in which a piece of bent metal 0 is placed, engaging the threads on the screw D, so that the jaw C may be moved back and forth, as desired.
The ham or other material to be cut is placed over the grooves a and a the jaws B are adjusted into the proper position, and then the jaw O is screwed against the ham, holding it firmly in position.
Having thus described ourinvention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a meat-holder, the combination of the base provided with slots arranged in parallel lines and having enlargements, of movable jaws adapted to slide in said slots and to be held by said enlargements, a movable jaw provided with teeth and arranged opposite to the previously-mentioned jaws, and a screw provided with a handle arranged to engage the lower part of said movable jaw, substantially as described.
2. In a meat-holder, the combination with a base A, provided with elongated, parallel slots at having enlargements a, jaws B adapted to slide in said slots and to be held in said enlargements, the bases of said jaws being provided with transverse ribs at the end running the whole width of the base, and a longitudinal central rib, a movable jaw arranged opposite to the jaws B, and means for moving said jaw, substantially as described.
3. In a meat-holder, the combination of the base provided with parallel slots having enlargements, movable jaws adapted to slide in said slots and to be held in said enlargemcnts, a movable jaw arranged opposite to the previously-mentioned jaws, said jaw being provided with a perforated extension, a screw provided with ahandle passing said extension, and a piece of bent metal engaging said extension and said screw, substan tially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
